No, not pleasant reading.

How shameful. In Hitler's Germany, disabled people were euthanised. Perhaps we should return to that? Or, get them all into homes and institutions like the one exposed on Panorama last year. That way, we'd not have to see them at all.

My ds has asd and OCD so, a developmental condition and a co-morbid mental illness. He is bright, funny, articulate, artistic and has a quirky sense of humour. He hopes he'll get married and have kids when he's an adult.

He attends mainstream school now but will transfer to mainstream secondary with autism unit attached, in Sept this year. Those who feel he is "not worthy" clearly have "perfect" children. Or imagine they do.

Dolly
Personally I would flip this entire research on its head and state that no way on Gods earth would i tolerate (most not all) 'normal' kids in my boys' class!
My boys would be tormented and bullied to death by these oh so clearly perfect brats children! Grrrr

Thanks for the info, appalling downward trend. Do we know the size and location of the survey?

Dustinthewind · 20/01/2012 17:42

Sorry, I thought it was The Independent.
So the information relates to Ireland. Not surprised.

unpa1dcar3r · 21/01/2012 09:22

No I don't Dustin; I copied the link from a different internet site from a friend in Ireland, sorry.
But it makes scary reading and I can't imagine the UK results would be much different Sad

Not nice to read at all.

My DS has aspergers and he is the most loving, sensitive, funny and loyal boy and we wouldn't swap him for a "normal" boy for the world.

This is from his mum who has been sworn at, shouted at, had horrid letters sent from so called "normal" mothers of "normal" boys.

Thank god I have a supportive mainstream school and a few close friends who see him for the wonderful boy he is and not as a label.

These reports make me soooo mad Angry .

It doesn't surprise me at all. We have a truly ignorant society in regards to disability and it starts from the top down. Those in power and authority who legislate and operate institutions such as health and education, need educating themselves.
Sad

MORE than one in five people say they would object if a pupil with an intellectual disability or autism was in the same class as their child.

:(Thats about right. Statement jealousy because its seen as preferential treatment with a personal TA. (heard that in the school grounds before)

Oh well 1 in 5 hmmm well thats 1 child that will grow up with ignorant parents and no doubt learn sadly from them on how to be prejudice against disability.

Sadly the government cant MAKE people be more accepting otherwise by now there would be no prejudice in the world. :(

auntevil · 21/01/2012 16:55

I think the government and authorities have much more of a role to play in changing peoples ideas. They may talk the talk, but sadly actions are lacking.
Lets face it, if the LEA for example, really did believe that Every Child Matters - why do we have to fight so much to get a basic right to a fair education? Why so many tribunals - that are won?
Its all well and good having the policies, but if the people putting them into practice aren't educated, not just in how to implement, but why they are doing so, it all falls apart. Apathy breeds apathy.
