Being Punished for not concentrating

My DD is 5 in reception had CMV and is profoundly deaf with a CI

Today her teacher told me that she isn't concentrating for long enough at story time with question and answers so she will now be made to sit in a blank corner of the class for 3 minutes looking at a picture of a sad face

Am I crazy by not seeing how this will help her concentration levels?
I see it as so negative and wouldn't be surprised if they put a hat with a D on her head.
When I say she's not concentrating it's not that she gets up or disrupts the class but they said she looks bored and goes into her own world
Surely that says something about the teacher not being engaged with her

My other major issue is that 1 day of each of the last 3 weeks when i've collected her, her Cochlear implant was switched off and the teacher told me that she had been really disconnected in the afternoon - well you're going to be if you can't hear what is being said to you or asked of you. The class only have 8 pupils in it who are also all deaf

Does anyone have any ideas of what can be done to help her extend her concentration level in a positive and constructive way?

now going to have a big sob

Don't sob - get very, very angry with them as they are letting your DD down very badly.

What they are doing is not acceptable.

It may be that she needs 1:1 support to encourage her to concentrate and to ensure that her implant is activated. That's something that school should be considering and could do something about.

Have you spoken to the SENCO?

Does she have an IEP?

Does she have a Statement?

You may want to consider all of these.

This is appalling. Am I right in thinking that she is in a hearing impaired support unit - you said that there are only 8 children in the class and they are all hearing impaired.

You need to speak to the SENCO and express your deep dissatisfaction at the way this is being handled.

I agree with WetAugust, get very very angry! I am actually very very angry for you, I'm not even sure that this type of practice is actually allowed. She should be rewarded for good behaviour, and learning should be a positive experience for her. Making her sit in the corner will do nothing for her attention. You can't punish a child for looking bored.
I would speak with the head. And if that fails to change anything (if dd tells you she sat in the corner) I would phone the SEN dept at County (lea).

Does she use sign language? I know some places actively discourage teachiing it but it can be a life saver.

Deaf children need to concentrate more than hearing children in order to lipread / decode / understand whay is going on, she may just be getting to her limit and needing to switch off, and with a CI she might be doing that in a very real sense as well as a metaphorical sense.

Is her teacher trained as a teacher of the deaf? The teacher should know that a deaff child needs to work much harder to understand and that can be exhausting.
