Pretty positive DS has ADHD...what am I in for?

He is in Year 1, he really struggled through Reception...his symptoms all 'fit' (I was a teacher and taught many secondary aged students with the same thing, so my knowledge of symptoms is coming from experience...I just missed in in my own DS...chalked it up to just a busy kid, iyswim). His year 1 teacher is lovely, but this is her very first year teaching, so though we talked today about him having a SENCO perhaps assess him (we have also made an appt with GP to try and get a referral to have him tested, and to rule out anything else), I don't think she has had many experiences with any learning disabled children.

I'm just wondering how difficult this is going to be...I know that I'm just a layperson, but I know my kid, and I know that his struggling is a result of 'something', not just him. I'm fairly certain that it isn't AS...that was initially another consideration, but he doesn't fit the profile for even lower spectrum.

Anyway...totally rambling...can you give me any advice, or share with me your experiences with this?

I don't know much about ADHD but if you re-post this on the SN Children board there are many with ADHD experience there.

Thank you...it does seem like this board wasn't the best place!

We have spoken to lots of parents that were suspecting ADHD but after a cognitive assessment can show if they are frustrated in certain areas.

Please don't hesitate to PM me if we can give you any advice we will.

My son was diagnosed with ADHD in November last year ... he is in Year 1 and my goodness you're in for a ride!!!

My son was getting into trouble almost every day at school (being sent to the office etc), he was violent and aggressive and was waaaaay down at the bottom of his class educational wise.

Best to see a specialist and get a proper diagnosis if you think thats what your son has (there are about 3 different types of ADHD btw).

Feel free to pm me with any questions.
