What's your ASD DCs 'default setting'?

Just that really...inspired by a comment made by 4.7yr old DD's class teacher yesterday...

(obviously we are still at assessment stage, so perhaps i use 'ASD' in error, but since she def has traits, i'll borrow it for now)

he said 'but she seems so happy, she's not sullen or sad' - yup, that's her 'default setting' as i call it.

she sings when she's stimming, when she's in trouble, when we're rushing through the shopping centre to find a toilet, when she should be putting her shoes on, when she should be eating, when we are in a hurry..

i know we're incredibly lucky as it causes less outside stress (inference if you like) from other people at times, but am still interested in other people's experience

Smiley, happy, very very active, noisy, constantly humming or singing, sensory seeking, never still at all

Except when he gets anxious when he's bitey, cross and screamy.

Or when he's surfing, when he chills, relaxes and sits still for an hour.

He's 12, non-verbal and severely autistic.

LOL. he has a cheep mp3 player, but i dont like the thought of getting him an expensive one just yet...we have to look at things like "hes almost 8 but acts like almost 6"
He also tends to break things hahahaha

He does like his music though. Is that a common theme among ASD kids??

saintlyjimjams · 22/01/2012 00:33

Today: repetitive :neck wine:

EllenJaneisnotmyname · 22/01/2012 00:35

I don't know so much if music is a theme, but on an iPod touch you can get most of the apps from an iPhone. My DS2 loves his iPod touch a little too much, so it wasn't a serious suggestion. It does give me some peace from the constant highs and lows, though...

Triggles · 22/01/2012 08:25

DS2 is mostly happy, unable to sit still, constantly talking (either at us or to himself, very repetitive), but can change moods in seconds and be upset, sad, frustrated, cross... and then flip back to happy like someone turned on a switch, with seemingly no memory of the problem. He also has been singing more and more.

FriggFRIGG · 22/01/2012 19:29

Exactly like triggles the switch flip is the most bizarre thing.

Today she just couldn't stop talking,my head was ringing with the noise,my mother offered her some chocolate ( Hmm )if she could just keep quite for 1 minute...
She couldn't do it.Sad

She hasn't been DX yet though,so I feel like an imposter.Blush

Ellen.....i get what you meant now...thats possibly not a bad idea.....hmmmm.....think i will have to start saving...
triggles and friggFRIGG yes DS can be like that, with the switch it can be unnerving at times.
friggFRIGG, dont worry, my DS hasnt officially been DX yet. i got told once, "you will turn out to be right!"....trust yourself and join in!!!
