Probiotics

I want to give my little boy (6) a good probiotic; he won't drink Actimel anymore and I'm not sure Actimel is a great probiotic anyway. He has ASD and a very restricted diet so basically I need something that I can hide in Ribena or a marmite sandwich

TIA

This is the best probiotic. I think you'd be able to open the capsule up and hide it in a marmite sandwich. (But I can't 100% remember)

I use this sweetie type one. Which isn't as good - but kids are happy to take it......

Thanks IndigoBell, I'll try that in his sandwich, so long as he never sees me doing it I'm sure I'll get away with it (marmite can surely hide anything?)

Sorry, this os ok for a 6 year old? I only ask 'cos I notice they do a specific 4+ product (but it's a chewable tablet so that's a no-no)

we use this I put it in yoghurts now but used to put it in juice or milk

and its suitable from 6 months

That one might hide in Ribena... It's ridiculous the trouble I have getting anything into him! He has paracetamol as suppositories - anything else and you're trying to hide it

what do probiotics do?

My DS has cerebral palsy/mild. But he has benefitted sooo much from the other vitamins and minerals that Indigo suggested that I wonder whether probiotics might help him too.

DS has attention difficulties and is very sensitive to sound and his vision is oversensitive too I think. He gets distracted v easily by things he sees and hears.

Until we took Indigo's vitamins and minerals DS was very impulsive and often out of control. But he has calmed right down now and school are really happy with the change too.

hopefully Indigo will come along and explain it better but my understanding is that natural immunity starts in the gut so helthy gut is important for general health - we've used probiotics after antibiotics for example, healthy gut also means it can better absorb vitamins etc which will then benefit general well being, ds also is sensitive to dairy/casien so I'm hoping the probiotics will help his gut repair and then he'll be able to tollerate small amounts which he seems to be able to do

Hi :)

I read all about probiotics on The GAPS diet

Basically a lot of our kids have sort of leaky gut. So you need to heal the gut by:

  • Cutting out food that makes it worse (like gluten)
  • Eating food that can heal it (like fatty meat stews)
  • Probiotics

GAPS diet says if you do this for 2 years you can cure their leaky gut, which will in turn cure a lot of their problems.

I know that when I cut out Dairy DS said 'Now, I don't feel sick all the time' :(
So then we cut out Gluten and he said 'Now, I don't have a sore tummy all the time' :(

Naturally once he no longer felt sick and had a sore tummy, his behaviour vastly improved.

It's not rocket science. No sore tummy = better behaviour.

Incidently before we cut out dairy he was having over a pint of milk a day. We did a hair test on him, and apparently he was deficient in calcium! So because of this 'leaky gut' he wasn't absorbing any calcium. :(

Oh, Thank you Indigo.

Incidentally - I keep wondering what I'd feel like if I took all of this stuff. I'm so amazed by DS's transformation. Previously I didn't believe in supplements AT ALL.

In fact the change in him slightly scares me. He has become sort of perfect, rather than real.

Do you take these things? How do they make you feel? Do they change your behaviour?

skewiff - I've never believed in suppliments either before! I was brought up on 'have a varied and healthy diet and you'll be fine' I also find it hard to get across ds's dietary needs when visiting friends as again I was alway brought up that you ate exactly what you were given no complaints.

I think beeing casine free has had an affect on ds, wondering if I should start GF too...

dh has started to cut out wheat from his diet and says he feels like he has more energy, he's also started taking suppliments. I've always suffered with PMS and recently read that more calcium can help but I don't really want to up my cow's milk intake so am taking suppliments and this month has been way better. We've not really thought to try anything else.
I feel that ds has been more 'connected' to his surroundings since CF and on suppliements - I'm reading with interest about leaky gut and opiate peptides although there is a 'lack of sciencific evidence' I'm going on gut feeling as it were and maybe its placebo affect that I feel proactive but if it helps I think that is still valid Grin

oh and We all now take probiotics if we have to have antibiotics (thankfully not very often)
