Hi - I am new to Mumsnet, Hello SN Mums. We're trying to run our in home and at nursery school ABA/ VB programme for DS aged 3.5, yet we've ended up now with no tutors. I've exhausted GUM tree and the like. Is there something I am missing, I feel that everyone who talks about ABA is really positive, I am very positive about the actual programme, yet when we're let down consistently by poor attendance/ no show by tutors it's not fair on DS, especially when at nursery school. Any advice very, very welcome. We live in West London.

Hello fastscooter we had a lot of trouble getting the right tutors initially same problems with no shows etc., but it's been worth the wait as we have the right people in place now.

There are a number of places you can look in.

  1. Yahoo ABAUK group ( I did not have much luck there I might add but it might be different for you)
  2. Vbcommunity.org.uk (same again but there is no harm trying)
  3. if ur local university has a psychology department. Send them an email advertising for tutors and they will be able to forward this to students who might be interested.(they are usually cheaper than Experienced therapists but will need training, I got a great response from students where I am, but decided to go with experienced tutors.)
  4. aba tutorfinder.com. (again found some really good experienced tutors from there, but you have to pay to download cvs)
  5. PEACH website.

I found mine by going onto the VB community website and cold calling everyone who had ever looked for work as a tutor. I've got two excellent tutors that way though they were surprised at my contact because neither had been looking for work for over 5 years.

Have you considered putting an ad in local paper and taking someone who has childcare exp and then training them up. We had a fantastic person this way. She didn't have any experience but she was warm, caring, fun, good with children generally and willing to learn. She is still with dd in school, but now as a 1:1. She was also older, needed work and was very reliable. We ended up with two people like this and then later added one v exp professional tutor. It worked really well and I had the same three people for two and a half years.

Also look for mothers with Asd children that are in school during the day, parents that have done home based aba programmed should be best resources.

Look at the council websites for the schools that have special needs resources and units attached to them, the TAs working in the units may want extra hours? I know my son Ta looked for something in the summer, pm me if you like I am happy to put you in touch.

Hi,

I'm a qualified teacher and an ABA Tutor, I work in a school from Monday to Friday but after 4pm I'm free, also for the weekends. I wish to work some extra hours and I'm available to support children after school hours. I'm familiar with PECS as well. I have several years of experience working with children aged between 1 and 16. In case you need my support please send me an e mail [email protected]
