Dd has phobia hearing and reading about body parts and too distressed to study biology

Dd (AS, PDA and 14) has recently returned to school (part time) after missing 18 months due to anxiety and an obstructive LA. It has been hard work.

Today she attended a science lesson where body parts were discussed. She was too distressed to stay for the class. We now hear that biology will be the science topic for the whole term and don't know how to manage this.

I wondered if anyone has dc with similar difficulties and how they were managed/overcome?

Helppp, don't want to jeopardise her return to school Sad

My DS (AS, OCD 15) has problems with classes that deal with sex (biology in yr7 sex and relationships topic in RE this year yr10). He has been allowed to do different work on both occasions. In biology he sat in the library with some related work and a bit of input from a TA though I'm don't think he really needed the TA as science is his thing. As RE is a GCSE subject he did a different option with teacher input in the support unit he is attached to. (All the students there do mainstream classes but the facilities are there for them to be withdrawn if necessary.) School also arranged individual sex education session with a teacher he likes and who was sensitive to the difficulties. If your school is not that supportive, could they at least arrange alternative subject matter in the library? Presumably she isn't GCSE yet so won't matter too much. Stress how important it is to her staying in school.

Thank you for the replies. School isn't the issue here, it is a prestigious independent school for AS/HFA children and has a very high staff-pupil ratio. I am sure they would be able to organise some alternative work. dd has just started after a bitter battle with the LA aand tribunal.

However science is just about her best subject and it would be a shame to opt out totally because of body parts Sad. I wondered if there was some strategy around it, just clutching at straws here...
