Hi Guys

Sorry to pop up like this but have a question and wondered if you guys could help me out.

I am in the process of appealing my DS statement at tribunal and currently he is being educated in a PRU. The LA agree that this is not the right enviroment for him.

Since he was 2 and he is 9 now he has been excluded from every single school provision. He is autistic, has a degenerative hearing impairment, severe receptive and expressive speech disorder and his sensory needs are massive, he is thought to have a specific learning difficulty but not MLD.

Local Authority are proposing a ASD unit attached to a mainstream school, this unit does not open until April and so has not even been tried before. He has really complex needs and independent salt and EP feel he needs a waking day curriculm. I know its a big question but do you think they are being realistic in terms of getting the tribunal to name it? Part of there rationale is that they beleive him to be capable of attending mainstream school in the future.

He went for an assessment at an independent school and they said he was too complex for them. I have found a school that is residential but its four hours from where I live, now I know its a distance but is that really a reason to preclude it, especially given that it has been virtually impossible to find a school locally? The next nearest one is 6 hours away and although a good and they have agreed to assess, I dont think its appropriate. Plus I dont want to put him through more assessment when I think the school I have found and they agree is appropriate. It is an ASD school the one I want but it deals with complex needs. Then again what ASD child doesnt have complex needs as it were (no offence intended)

I spoke to my solicitor and asked her about it and she said that the reason people arent keen as its a distance for the experts to travel to see it. Which I personally think is an awful attitude to have.

My son is becoming really aggressive at home, this weekend I have bruising to my lower back and arms where he was kicking and hitting me, its just me at home and I am so tired. He is lovely and I mean really lovely, but he is very very tall for example at 9 he is 5'2 and strong. I'm so stressed and tired and just wondered if anyone could offer me advice please?

Sorry if this is waffle and if you need me to clarify what I am asking please say and will do.

Just to add I receive no support from children services, in fact they say he doesnt meet threshold as he doesnt have mld, but I am also challenging this

Yes they are being unrealistic. Perhaps desperate?
As the unit is new you can most probably find out a lot of info from the council website eg minutes etc about how it is staffed etc as the Executive will have had to have received a report on costings.
Its about what is needed now, not in future and far better for him to go to SS and make progress and transfer back from a position of success than to be failed again.
You sound like you have a strong case
Maybe you should photograph your bruises as evidence.
