...and the word alex wanted to spell was BITCH!

Horror of horrors....he was doing his favourite passtime at the computer ...typing words into google ...then searching 'images'

can you imagine what he'd have seen if he hadn't spelt it BICH!!!

so...filters on....cannot risk him 'exploring'

also the uther word he tried was FUKE (!!!*%£$"!!!)

promise i don't use this language.

but seriously....haveing real concerns about how he hears and repaets language...and cannot get him to see it is offensive.

It's a tricky one, MrsF. Ds1 repeats words he's heard elsewhere. I usually say something like "That's not a nice word. We don't say that" etc etc but this has backfired a bit. Ds1 now gets annoyed when he hears even relatively innocent words and tells us not to use them. Lots of:

"You're not allowed to say that word, Mum!"

"What word?"

"Piece!"

Later I realise he meant something else entirely! Also words like "stupid" and "idiot" are now on his personal list of Words That Must Never Be Uttered. It's as though he has a faulty filtering system of his own.

The typing bit sounds like a nightmare. Even the best filters seem to let things through, don't they? Sorry, I'm not much help at all!

CT...alex insists that SHIT is ok to use as it is in the dictionary....so is a REALword...and means the same as POO...and then there is the case of leigh 'finding' the word POOH when he was doing a wordsearch at school and being told off for that...so i then had to explain to leigh that though poo is not exactly offensive - etc... etc
that when doing a wordsearch at school it's probably best not to find words such as poo...which ofcourse is very confusing to a ASD child....as how the F are they supposed to know this!!!!

Sorry but I am PMSL at the bit about Leigh and the wordsearch!!! He should have been given extra credit for being so observant!

MrsFrostgetful · 16/01/2006 11:07

yes...me too ct...i end up asking my careworker whetehr such-and-such word is appropriate or not cos even I cannot tell.....i have an aspergers dictionary which is brilliant as it explains ALL the swear words ets...and then even grades their offensiveness!!! But not every word is in there!!!

I wouldn't have thought it was a bad word. I suppose it depends on how the wordsearch was set out. If the instructions were to find the words from a set list then the teacher might have thought he was being cheeky by adding poo. (I should probably re-phrase that!). If it was an open-ended "See how many words you can find" question then I wouldn't have thought it was bad or anything.

I'm still laughing as I think about it!

mummytosteven · 16/01/2006 11:16

could you show him your aspergers dictionary, and say, see, the book says it's rude? or then again you might want to hide the dictionary from him so he doens't get further googling ideas . I do remember looking up rude words in the dictionary myself when I was about 10

coppertop · 16/01/2006 11:26

Me too.

mummytosteven · 16/01/2006 11:28

together with one or two of my other little friends! wasn't just me

coppertop · 16/01/2006 11:29

I think my brother was my partner-in-crime when I did it.

This is turning into a confessional, isn't it?

MrsFrostgetful · 16/01/2006 11:31

me too....but seriously MTS you are so right...by explaining things i feel i often introduce MORE ideas!!!!

still alex is 6...looks 4 and he still gets away with murder as he does look cute...leigh however is 9...emotionally like age 4...so gets into all kinds of stresses when language is used wrong...or if he is told he is wrong...and he will then 'literally' explain why he said whatever he said...and then he appears 'cheeky' or insisting on having the last word!! Grr!!! I hate ASD at these times....

i'm off now! really must tidy up!!!

OP posts:
mummytosteven · 16/01/2006 11:33

don't know if this will be a consolation, but sounds like he's a very intelligent 6 year old, to have thought that up...

coppertop · 16/01/2006 11:33

Tidy up??

Now that's what I call bad language!

MrsFrostgetful · 17/01/2006 21:22

leigh made me laugh today... i'd left the radio on in his room....and when he came home from school...he said

"mum, the cd player is talking to me"

then i described how to turn it off...and he failed...so he turned the volume down

now he hears MY radio in the kitchen... but obviously no connection with what is in his room!!!
AND...as far as following instructions to switch it off...well tom or alex would have already tried flicking anything that remotely was able to be flicked...but not leigh...he NEVER does ANYTHING he has NOT BEEN TOLD TO DO (on the whole!!! few exceptions...but generally...if he asks you for something...you say where it is...he looks...it's not there...he would not consider looking elsewhere...yesterday someone put the toothpaste on the shelf above where it is usually...he came for help- he could not find it- and when i showed him how close it was to where he looked he shrugged...no reaction...which was a relief!!!!)

so again i smile at the quirkiness in my home...and feel grateful that at the mo...the waters are calm...and i am finding things to smile about...as the tide can change abbrubtly!
