I asked for advice back in october, and had some great replies here.
I have had a letter back from cahms, refusing referrel. They said they can't see any reason to see him.
So what do i do now?
Still no real improvement. In fact i had a note last night to pop into school tonight, because DS seems to have forgotten all key words from last term. These are really easy words like,it, in, my ect.
I feel like nobody wants to help him.

hi there

i'm new to all this,(going through assmt route ourselves) and not going to be able to give you professional advice, but wondered if you've actually been seen by CAMHS at all?

your previous thread doesn't make this clear to me.

flyingunderpants · 10/01/2012 10:15

Sorry i did mean CAMHS.No they haven't seen DS.GP did a referrel but they have sent a letter refusing to see him.
Which part of me understands why they refused, but i was hoping it would be a starting point if nothing else.

I've sent you a message.

crazygal · 10/01/2012 10:18

have you seen a pead??

crazygal · 10/01/2012 10:18

or ed psych?

tooearlymustdache · 10/01/2012 10:25

in that case, i think i'd go back to the GP and ask him to explain why.

i'm saying this because i'm also finding it really difficult to understand how they haven't even offered you an initial appointment.

flyingunderpants · 10/01/2012 10:30

crazygal, DS has only been seen by SALT and SENCO.
He was under ENT untill 2 years ago.He had glue ear,for a while. But apart from ear-ache once in a while,is fine now.
My GP made me feel like i was making the whole thing up.
The school seem to be slow at doing anything to help.
I have know experiance in any of this, and don't know what to do.

The letter from CAMHS,states that DS doesn't meet their criteria. They said they didn't understand why he was refurred to them.

This is a brief outline of DS.
DS is 6,he will be 7 the end of July.
He had speech delay.I was told this was due to him having glue ear.Apart from ear ache every now and then,he hasn't had any more problems with his ears for around 2 years.
He was discharged from SALT in reception class. But has just had another block of 6 sessions, after being refurred back again.
He has made little or no progress, since yr1.He's IEP+ is the same now,as it was at the start of yr1.He's now in year 2.
DS forgets things he knew last week. i.e. keys words. But he also forgets which room he needs to go to,even though its the same room as last school year.
The one day he even went to DD and said he didn't know where he had to go.It was dinner time he should have been in the dinner hall.

you need to do what i did,
i sat in the gp office and said im NOT moving till you refer me to a pead! he said no!! i shit myself :) and stayed there....he tapped his fingers on his desk and then said.....ok!! :)
then i hit the school,i done the same to them....i want an ed psych in....etc...they got him in 4 weeks later..:)
i had had enough tho,had enough of not getting anywere,im getting places now tho..

If the child 'only' has dyslexia, then there is no point at all getting a referral to a paed or CAMHS.

The only 'professional' in the state system who 'deals' with kids with SpLD (specific learning difficulties) is an Ed Psych.

crazygal · 10/01/2012 10:59

could someone please explain what camhs do??

IndigoBell · 10/01/2012 11:13

CAMHS are clinical psychologists (and psychariatrists?) (which is very different to educational psychologists)

CAMHs stands for 'Children Adolescent Mental Health' (I think)

In some areas they dx ASD and ADHD. In some areas they don't. (Depending whether your NHS thinks of those as mental health problems or developmental problems...)

crazygal · 10/01/2012 11:15

thank you x

flyingunderpants · 10/01/2012 11:15

crazygal what would pead and ed psych do?Sorry like i said above this is all new to me.
I'm going to phone for an appointment with GP.Hopefully i'll see a different one this time.

Paediatricion assesses for developmental problems (ie ASD, ADHD etc)

An Ed Psych assesses for Dyslexia.

(An OT assesses for Dyspraxia).

Normally you see the Ed Psych through school. Normally the GP can't refer you to one.

And the GP would only refer you to a pead if there were concerns about her development.......

flyingunderpants · 10/01/2012 11:47

Thank you.
I do have concerns about DS's development, not just in education.
E.g. he's lack of communication skills. This was always put down to his speech delay. But i'm not so sure any more.
He will talk happily to DS1 who is 25,but has never spoke to DDIL.I have never even seen him make eye contact with her,but he has known her all his life.He has only this last week even looked at DGD,who will be one next month. It was like he was scared of her.
His memory is not very good. You can't ask him to do more then one thing at a time.

ASD / ADHD / Dyspraxia and Dyslexia all have so many overlapping symptoms, that it's rare to find a child who just has one of those conditions.

Sounds like your child has symptoms of dyslexia and ASD.

I recommend any of the treatment centres that think all of these conditions are caused by the same thing - and in particular Tinsley Hosue is amazing.

flyingunderpants · 10/01/2012 12:08

Thank you for all of the replies.
I will see what DS's teacher says tonight. She's a lovely person, but i feel like we are going round in circles.I'm sure she thinks DS just can't be bothered.
I feel so sorry for him, when i think of him feeling lost at school.

Teacher can only help with ed pysch referral for the others on Indigo's list you need to take a determined trip to the GP.

flyingunderpants · 10/01/2012 12:36

Thanks bochead.
I have made an appointment with GP.Hopefully this time,i will be listened too.
Its not till next week so i have time to work out what to say.

Write down a list of issues and be prepared to throw your toys out of your pram. (eg I'm not leaving until youve written a referral letter to X, Y & Z!).
