DS2 is desparate to learn and instrument like his brother. He is 9 with some motor skills difficulties and spatial problems and struggles academically although he reads well.He manages in a in the classroom with ad hoc support when needed except for maths where he needs a lot of support. We do feel that we need to let him try the things that his brothers do and who knows it may be his thing.

His school participate in a string scheme and he has had a half term of cello lessons,he has enjoyed it but really I don't think it is the right instrument for him and group lessons are a double edged sword for him.

The cornet has been suggested as small fairly simple etc does anyone have any experience of children with SN learning to play an instrument.

Well ours is about to get a trombone - I'll let you know how it goes next week !

RTKangaMummy · 14/01/2006 12:13

DS {aged 10} has dyspraxia along with hypermobility in his joints

He plays trumpet so give the cornet a go

My daughter 8 (no doiagnosis, but definatly had the traits) plays the French Horn.

My eldest two (11 and 13) started off with Cornets, as did I. Eldest son 13 now plays the euphonium (You don't want that one in the house its huge.

Youngest 5 has good go with all the instruments too.

My friend's dd is 7 and she has dyspraxia and I think she also has hypermobility in her joints. She is learning the piano and seems to be getting a lot out of it.

Kittypickle · 14/01/2006 18:49

DD (7) with dyspraxia & hypermobility started learning the piano last Easter. She really enjoys it and I think it has helped her by giving her an auditry feedback to the pressure she exerts on the keys (and therefore helped her writing by helping her judge the pressure she exterts on a pencil)and I think it is helping her co-ordination.

Thanks for all the responses,I take the point about the trombone but he has 2 uncles who play the trombone proffessionally and a cousin a year older who is already v good on trombone so I want to avoid the comparisons etc.I will ask them obviously for their advice but wanted to consult here on the special needs aspect, they have a brass band at school so maybe that could fill the orchestra gap.so glad to hear so many positive stories

I was going to suggest brass too. I asked a friend of mine who is a brass player and she has suggested the trumpet, for the reasons snailspace suggested. e.g. opportunities to play in an orchestra etc.

RTKangaMummy · 15/01/2006 12:12

Yes My DS plays in the school orchestra with his trumpet, there are alot of them though and he had to pass his grade 1 before being allowed to join

What about french horn, there is only one of them in the orchestra and so he would not be compared to others

There are 4 (or 5) french horns in an orchestra. If you want no comparison it's got to be a tuba!

RTKangaMummy · 18/01/2006 00:06

Sorry I meant there is only one french horn in DS school orchestra

not in orchestras in general,
