Hi All,

On some of your kind recommendations I ordered some behavior balance for DD aged 5 which arrived today by courier (very exciting!!!!) So just after a little advice really will the 1 spoonful be enough to begin with or should I start with 2 and move down to 1. How quickly should I expect to see a difference in behaviour. Is it better to give in the morning before school. Unfortunately there were no guidelines with it so any info or advice that you have is greatly appreciated. Thanks

It doesn't taste too bad (compared to lots of the others), but the plastic casing is annoying.

I spit out the plastic casing, but the kids can't get the hang of it :)

sphil · 06/01/2012 22:39

Oh so you cant swallow the whole thing then, like the Eye-Qs? That wont be any good for Ds2 - he'll just swallow the whole thing, plastic and all!

IndigoBell · 06/01/2012 22:41

Yes, the normal ones are swallowable and non tasting.

The chewable ones are chewable :)

sphil · 07/01/2012 22:30

No, I mean do you have to spit the case of the chewables out?

IndigoBell · 08/01/2012 19:23

I don't know if you have to - but I do, 'cause I don't like them :)

incywincyspideragain · 09/01/2012 12:08

book marking my place too

I've read all the thread with interest and would appreciate your advice

all - we're giving ds eye-q chewables, looks like the vegapa is better - is it ok to continue with eye-q till that arrives? we also do a probiotic and calcium and multi vit, what levels of zinc, magnesium and vit B should I be looking for? The calcium is more to up levels as ds is dairy free but should it be more that the RDA?

does anyone do espon salt baths? or anything else to reduce 'toxins'? We're on fluroide free tooth paste but someone mentioned filtering water... I'm not sure how far to go, I'm finding it hard to know whats helping and whats not!

HolyCalamityJane · 09/01/2012 12:53

Hi Incywincy,

We are doing the Epsom salts to be honest I can't really tell you whether they help are not it is still early days but we are willing to try anything and they certainly won't do any harm.

I too have the Eye Q chewables and have been cutting them open and disguising them in a yoghurt but DD does notice there is a funny taste so in order to get some Omega into her I have been giving her the Kids Omega I know there is not as much Omega 3 in it as the Eye Q but at least I am getting some into her and have been giving her plenty of fish to eat during the week- homemade salmon fish fingers are yum.

I definitely think the behaviour balance is helping am keeping a food diary and noticeably over the weekend we have 2 meltdowns following a visit to Granny's house where cake and jelly babies were given!!!!!!

We do the epsom baths, but in conjunction with magnesium supplements (340 mg a day). Ds2 is 9 and weighs 5 stone. We were told we could increase the mag, but when I tried he became quite hyper, so I reduced it again. I definitely notice a difference when he doesnt have the mag capsules - his bowels are less regular, he wets the bed more and he is more agitated. So I would say that, for us, the epsom salts arent enough on their own - but I think every child is different. Nt sure about calcium, zinc and Vit B as we dont use them yet, though I want to.

If you look at the Treating Autism website, they have a list of recommended dosages, though tbh its sometimes a bit confusing! And the problem is, sometimes it conflicts with other advice ( eg Robin Pauc's - though he does state that his protocol is not for the use of those with classic autism). I would start with tiny doses and work up very very gradually, keeping a diary. Dont stop straight away if you get a negative behaviour reaction - sometimes this can be a good sign.

incywincyspideragain · 10/01/2012 11:30

Thank you - the threating austim website has so much info! we did an espon salt bath for the first time last night after swimming (after ready about the general benifits I put the other 2 in as well and was tempted to try it Smile), I've been told it was good for counter acting the chemicals in pool water so maybe will just do it on swim night and see what happens - the website says cups, sorry to be thick but how much is a cup? and where do you get the salts from? I only managed to get a small amount from boots

I couldn't find the list of recommended dosages on the website - do you have a link?
eye-q started off ok but now ds is refusing due to taste... to vegapa taste any better? I've been scared off fish due to mercury levels - honestly I think reading about it sometimes gives you too much information! ds loves smoked salmon and I'd been buying the cheap trimming for his packed lunch snadwiches but then it turns out the cheaper the fish the more chemicals involved as they artifically make it pink... he's going to be the best fed out of all of us if we can afford it!

I'm also finding it hard with ds in school as I never feel like I have a complete idea of what he is like on a day to day but I will start keeping diary - interesting he's been CF for about 2 months, had some ice cream on Sunday and I've not seen any affect yet.... can the gut repair? or maybe he'll have his meltdown today Smile

IndigoBell · 10/01/2012 11:48

You buy Epsom Salts from here - and they mean a cup like a coffee cup.

It's just magnesium. And you need a lot of it. I started off with a cup every second day.

If he can swallow tablets than buy the vegepa tables. They have no taste :)

The vegepa chewables don't taste toooo bad. But only one way to find out if he'll tolerate them or not.....

The gut can repair - read the GAPS diet

sphil · 11/01/2012 13:00

I'm pretty sure that Ds2's gut has repaired - at least partially - as he is now able to tolerate occasional gf/cf infringements.
If you dont want to buy Epsom online, our local independent chemist orders 5kg boxes for us - might be worth trying yours?
It may be that the dosages document comes from the Autism Research Institute - I'll have a ferret around and get back to you.

HolyCalamityJane · 11/01/2012 16:05

I got my Epsom Salts in Holland and Barrett. Today DD did not take her behavior balance and threw a chair in school co-incidence?????? Actually her behaviour has been pretty awful today Sad

ds1's IEP review yesterday - class teacher commented he's been less grumpy/stroppy since CF Smile so glad she hinted she recognised it may have helped

holy - sorry the hear dd had bad day, we're still experimenting with suppliments so no helpful advice from me I'm afraid just hope its a better day tomorrow x

cilcil · 10/02/2012 12:00

sphil when child got worse did he laughed one minute then cry for no reason

Iceflower · 03/03/2012 09:42

I know I'm resurrecting an old thread, but just wanted to feed back my dd's experience with behaviour balance. I ordered a bottle for her after reading all the excellent reviews. She started taking it and I noticed an improvement. From being a subdued quiet and anxious child, she seemed unnaturally high and giggly after a week on BB. Then there was a sudden dramatic drop in mood and she sunk into depression. She herself pinpointed the BB and has now come off it, hopefully the effects will wear off soon.

I know one or two of you have noticed an initial improvement followed by a deterioration, so wanted to add our experience as a caution to those thinking of starting BB.

IndigoBell · 03/03/2012 10:01

Ice - thanks for updating us.

BB contains very high levels of B6 (30mg) which I think is what some kids react to.

Try her on zinc & magnesium (I use osteocare) and a general multivitamin that only contains 2mg of B6

incywincyspideragain · 04/03/2012 22:50

I also need to add a bit of an update, we're not getting the suppliments right at all - it was going so well up to half term and then last 2 weeks (new term) tons of defiant behaviour & back chat to teacher - might be more, I've been called into School tomorrow Sad

looking back over what has been going on over last 2 weeks and we have stopped eye-q's Blush I think I just ran out and forgot to replace them... started vit d suppliment due to general recommendation (going to stop that) upped epsom salt baths - 2 a week with 2 cups in from 1 a week with one cup - can it make that them more hyper/defiant??
still doing probiotics and multi vit

We've also done a couple of dietary changes - almost Gluten Free as we were heading towards GF/CF, changed soya milk for coconut (for all 3 boys - littler 2 are fine with it) I've never heard of a reaction to removing wheat or having coconut milk but has anyone else?

I've just ordered more multi vits and more eye-qs - I was going to change to Vegpa but I feel like I need to go back wards to go forwards again - I'm gutted ds is having so much trouble at School. We don't have a dx but Aspergers traits, teacher saying ODD. Finding it all so hard to know

incywincyspideragain · 04/03/2012 23:11

I know you shouldn't google but just read that an underlying magnesium deficiency can bring on a reaction when using vitamin D suppliments - could anyone elaborate on how a magnesium deficiency presents? I guess this could be why ds reacted to the increased salt baths?

incywincyspideragain · 04/03/2012 23:17

finally... has anyone has their children tested to see what vitamins and minerals they are deficient in?

IndigoBell · 05/03/2012 06:08

It's very likely your child has a magnesium defeciency. Most kids on the spectrum are.

I can't remember all the symptoms, but mouth ulcers are def one.

I think going back to eye-q for now sounds like a good idea. You can always try vegepa when things are more stable again.

Your multi vit should contain vitamin D. I wouldn't take a separate vit D - unless you're black. (and living in the UK where there's no sun)

I think you're doing the right things - just maybe try and do them only one at a time. Leave a few weeks between each change :)

timetoask · 05/03/2012 06:19

Inch, in answer to your question: I had blood tests done on my DS before giving him anything, it came back that everything is within normal range, decided not to give him anything. Except for fish oils.

ineedstrongcoffee · 05/03/2012 08:55

I too have had to stop giving DS behaviour balance. After seeing amazing results for the first week things quickly went down hill fast.
It made him hyper, aggressive and totally unpleasant to be around. We are now just doing epsom sat baths and fish oil and hes returned to his usual self.

Iceflower · 05/03/2012 09:12

ineedstrongccoffee I'm glad you posted, I was beginning to think I was imagining it. I had thought Behaviour Balance was worth a try and would cause no harm, being a supplement and not a drug, but it just shows caution needs to be exercised with everything.

I'm glad it's working with some children though.

incywincyspideragain · 05/03/2012 09:25

ice I thought the same about suppliments but I'm now convinced something I've given him has had an affect

timetotask how did you go about getting a blood test and how old is your ds?

indigo ds def used to have a lot of mouth ulcers, but non since going CF and having multi vit

I've got school meeting at 3pm today Sad not sure how much to mention about suppliments, they asked if anything had changed at home...

ineedstrongcoffee · 05/03/2012 09:26

iceflower i thought i was being stupid too even thinking it could be the behaviour balance causing the problems but it was,2 days after we stopped it he was back to his lovely old self.
I only posted because you had,cos i thought a supplement couldnt possibly cause chaos and i didnt want people to think i was strange lol Smile
