ds just turned 3 seems to become attached to things so easily. atm it is a stone, we cant do anything unless he has this stone with him. hes giving it rides in his cars, boats ect.

he gave it a kiss earlier and cuddled it, my dad saw him do it and said he's geting stranger by the day, but just wondered if this is common in all toddlers or does it have some relevance?

both my girls are. DD1 has fairly "normal" obbessions with certain toys, however DD2 spent weeks taking a torch and a fannel to school and everywhere Blush

Ds (4) always has something in his hand - obsessions last from a few hours to weeks! I've found him curled up in bed with all manner of household objects!! We've been round tesco with a kitchen whisk before now - this week it seems to be a car so doesn't attract as much attention!

saladsandwich · 04/01/2012 08:48

i never took much notice before but he does it alot and until recently always had to have something in his hand and his favourite thing goes where he goes...usually something like a certain car or 2 cars the same colour but the stone is a new one on me.

ds 7 has gone through bits of wool and twigs, last year he bought a souvenir after a day out with nan. It like a blue rubber ball with soft spikes. Printed on it was the name Paul, I asked why didn't you get it with your name?

He looked at me with total amusement and said "because his name is Paul" He was very attached to it and would become really distressed if he lost his "friend". I would tell him to look for it and he would stand in the middle of the room shouting "Paul Paul come out come out werever you are"

DD (NT as far as I know) has her teddy.

DS - ASD - has sticks and more sticks and random shit that he picks up and keeps and doesn't allow us to throw out.

Having comfort objects is normal - has he named the rock or is he pretending that its an animal? Talk to him about it and see what he says.

My son started an obsession in watching things spin from an early age. Then he carried a black toy car everywhere.

Mostly it's a car, Transformer or a picture. His latest is carrying around a torn out picture of 'Road Runner' which he calls his 'Meep-Meep' and he gets so upset if he loses it. Looking for said tiny picture of his Meep-Meep in his bedsheets at 2am ain't my idea of fun (but neither is his screaming either Grin)

chickensaresafehere · 04/01/2012 11:36

Dd2 has her mouse which goes everywhere she goes, but she can get attached to all sort of crap (plastic milk bottle top, random bits of paper) & will scream the house down if latest thing isn't tucked up in bed alongside mouse.
At the moment its a credit card type thing that ironically says 'Speak up' on it,dd2 is non-verbal GrinGrin

DS does this...we have had fads of grapefruit, banana, toy pig, toy bob the builder, various toy animals and currently a new unopened tube of toothpaste alternating with DDs Cinderella barbie doll Grin Most things don't leave the house though...only small appropriate toys are allowed on social outings and none of it goes to school.

DS almost permanently carries an orange around with him. He collects a new one every time we go shopping, then it goes everywhere with him, bath, bed etc.

He would never actually eat an orange tho Confused

DS2 does this as well. He has a toy bucket full of old credit cards, store cards, bank cards, gift cards... any plastic cards, he loves. Some days he'll just lay them all out on the floor, putting them in order by color or alphabetically or some other particular pattern. He knows when one is missing and gets really upset if he can't find one. He is always on the lookout for more and is constantly trying to convince us he needs more when we're in a store with a giftcard display (which is practically every shop!!).

Plus he has other items that he carries around with him or obsesses over. Right now, his plus Ham (from Toy Story - better known as Evil Dr Porkchop Grin) has been carried around the house - although thankfully he is agreeable to leave it at home and not bring it to school. I convinced him that he needed time alone in DS2's room during the school day to plot his evil plans in peace. Hmm

You really don't want me to join in this conversation, do you?
Really, you don't want a glimpse into the future. Grin
OP, the answer is yes, the solution is good storage of an appropriate nature and firmness over things that rot. Mine also chooses his clothing based on the number of useful pockets
Mine is 17, his collections are many and varied and have items in them he's loved since he was, ooohhh about three?
Including many geological specimens.

Yes I have a collector too. she sometimes has favourites that become very precious.

A piece of kindling on a camping hoillday last summer became known as "Sticky"Grin.

Sticky went everywhere with us in the pouch of Dd3's hoody.

On the last night she thought someone had put Sticky on the fire and went berserk, she hunted everywhere around the campsite for it to no avail.

With much shouting and sobbing I eventually sent her in the tent to get ready for bed and there was Sticky in the pouch of her dirty hoody which I had put in the tent!!

We still have it now on her desk in her room.

BlessGrin

We also have 8 bouncey balls that make a flower shape, If no one touches them Hmm.

And 97 marbles which only rarely come out of their box to be counted.
