ASD - drums and boxing?

Has anyone had any experience of their ASD child take up either drumming or boxing? My DS loved playing with his cousin's Bonga drums over Christmas and he seemed to use a lot of energy doing so. I am looking at a way for him to use up his energy when he comes back from school instead of his usual jumping on the spot (tried trampoline and pogo stick but he had no interest in either).
Similarly, I was wondering if anyone has tried their child boxing? It seems like a good way of focussing energy into one place. He is 6 years' old.

Yes, we tried our ds with drum lessons at age 7. Dx AS. We found he wouldn't focus very well at that age. He is very interested in drumming and all musical instruments. We tried him with the djembe drums when he turned 9 and he had lessons for 1 yr. This is about average for any child of his age according to his teacher. He loved it, tough trying to get him to practise was hard. He had a fabulous teacher and I sat in on lessons to lend a hand when necessary. It has been very successful.

He has a small drum kit and we may go for drum lessons at some point when he's a bit older. His first drum teacher said that she doesn't normally take any child on for lessons until they're 9 yrs old.

Hope this helps. Sorry haven't tried the boxing.

My dd has ADHD with AS traits she does taekwondo (British champion for her age) and is very good at it - perfectionist in her coming out!! She actually wanted to do boxing but they wouldn't take girls in my area until they're a bit older. Dd been doing tkd since she was 4 I told them from the off about her issues and they've been fab

Wow Chundle British Champion! That's fantastic :) DS has asked for a punchbag so might do that for him.

I think because she feels she HAS to be the best in certain situations it works to her advantage as she works hard at it to make sure 'she's better than everyone else!'
