Hi don't know what to do about school for my ds with asd?!

He is do 2 start school in sep we have put in a application for a statement hoping to get it!! I have been told that I can not put in a special school in the school application form till the statement have been approved only main stream so that is what I have don.
My ds have only some words 2 communicate with and I am really scared to put him in a "normal" school where they don't know how to work with him!!

But then a gain he is in a "normal" nursery now and is doing gr8t so maybe I'm just stressing for nothing?!

Don't know if all I need to her from his doctors is that he needs 2 be in a special school or main stream but when I ask they just say look at all ur options!!!!

Sorry for going on just stressed out!!

samira, we are inthe same boat and have not decided yet. there are mainstream schools, special schools, mainstream schools with special units (sometimes also ASD units) attached.
what I did and highly recommend is to make an appointment with the schools that are an option. go there, look around, ask loads of questions. I don't think you can make this decision without actually looking at the schools beforehand.
I found all the headteachers really helpful when I rang them to make an appoihtment for a visit. I also cohtacted my local parent partnership and they have been giving me a lot of advice and also came along when I visuted the schools.

I have a 4 year old with ASD and LD - he has a statement and attends a special school. I visited various schools and asked lots of questions and fell in love with the school he is in now - I just knew that would be the place he would fit in.
You don't get the full picture until you visit the school and see how the staff and children interact.

mainstream didnt suit my son at all (aspergers/medical), he didnt get supported and his self esteem/confidence hit rock bottom. He stopped attending mainstream a couple of months into year 2 when the problems with behaviour at home became worse (he held it together at school). I had him at home for 8 months whilst getting him diagnosed/statemented. I did look at 2 local mainstream schools but was not impressed with the Heads attitudes and the rush rush attitude. Fortunately my son has been attending a special school for 3months, because of the small classes, very experienced and supportive staff his confidence is building and hes very happy Smile
