I know I've seen people on here mention supplements that have helped their autistic children and I just wondered what you would recommend and why?

I've been googling but mostly coming up with people just trying to sell miraculous cures for autism Hmm
someone DP knows has a daughter with classic autism who, it would appear, makes a marked improvement each time she is on anti-biotics for anything which seems to back up those people who feel that it's somehow related to some kind of auto-immune/underlying health issue type thing

i am quite confused by it all right now but intend to do more reading up on this! but in the meantime thought i'd find out about supplements too :)

Yes, Behaviour Balance is full of zinc and magnesium, which is why I think it works, and what all our ASD / ADHD / Dyspraxic / Dyslexic kids need.

Here is the link for Behaviour Balance. Definitely worth a try

sorry, only just got back to this thread. thank you all so much for taking the time to post your experiences and general thoughts and recommendations

I'd read about zinc and magnesium being important before.
ds1 used to eat incredibly well although he is really becoming quite fussy now, which surprised me at nearly 7 Hmm
we're also vegetarian

i know from looking into it for myself that zinc is really difficult to get from food alone (baked beans good tho!)
so i am thinking of just starting off with that and magnesium and seeing how he goes and then adding others in if necessary,

he already takes a multivitamin, but have had a look today and actually it doesn't contain particularly high amounts of either zinc or magnesium.

with regards to epsom salts... does the body actually take much in? is there a big difference between taking an oral supplement and soaking your body in it?

cos epsom salt baths would b e easier lol

I think there's a big difference between the bath salts and taking it.

The osteocare stuff comes in chewy sweetie type ones, which he might not mind.

If you're vegetarian you really need to get omega into him as well. There is one vegetarian one that moose takes that is OK if you object o taking a fishy one.

yeah i've been looking at the omegas actually

we normally use animal parade vitamins (they all take a multivit) which a scientific kind of friend who knows about that kind of stuff recommended and they do an omega 3,6,9 which I think i'll buy which says it meets strict criteria for heavy metals etc, which was something I hadn't even thought of until I read it!

they also do a kidzinc tablet

not sure I can get him to take 3 different things though :-S

Don't get the animal parade omega. It contains more DHA than EPA.

The only brand I can recommend are vegepa

There capsules contain 500mg EPA and no DHA.

They do a chewable which I haven't tried yet, and a vegetarian one.

The zinc tablets look ok though.

I get my Epsom salt from the place you listed. I get 25kg which lasts us ages.

Get some professional advice as to what your child actually needs - what are the deficiencies that need to be corrected. Try the Autism Clinic ,Hampstead - see Prof J. Tommey
