Samira, he's probably quite young for them to test his understanding, especially if he has delayed speech. If he has average to above average IQ they'll eventually DX him as HF, but they have to be able to test it. If he's in a child development and assessment centre, they'll get the chance to observe him over time, otherwise you may have to wait until he's a bit older.

Others on here may know of tests for a young, speech delayed child. An EP may be your next port of call.

Samira... don't beat yourself up about babying your DS, it is natural to protect your child especially when they have special needs.

It is good that he says Hi and Bye because it shows he is aware that people are coming and going around him.

Try not to worry about where abouts on the spectrum he is and just encourage him. When he has successes, celebrate and if he takes a step back so what.

Does he go to a pre school/nursery of any kind?

samira837 · 27/12/2011 14:59

He is not in a child developmental and assessment centre he just gose 2 nursery and has a speach and language therapist that helps him with pic exchange thingy and that is it not much have changed (from the doctors) sins getting the dx.

Before getting the dx we went 2 a combine clinic for 8 weeks so that they could observe him also at the last appt with the psychologist she did some test with jigsaw and sad that he did as well as a child his age!!
I am sorry for going on but its. Just that everyone I know with kids who is on the asd have been told where the child is and 1 is younger then my ds!

Hi Samira. My ds was 3.6 when he was DX as ASD but he didn't get a HF DX for another year. If yoor DS is doing well at things that don't require speech, like jigsaws, that is really encouraging. Smile

They may be waiting to see what happens with his language samira.
If he starts talking more it will become more obvious where he sits on the spectrum.

Its great that he is using pecs because he will be able to communicate his needs to youSmile.

I think it is common for people to just be left to get on with it after DX.

My Dd3 who is 9 and has ASD has been discharged by everyone who has ever seen her except the physio's.

Good luckSmile.

samira, yes, I guess it is nomal. my DD (3.10) was diagnosed with asd last month. she also has very little speech. we also asked where she is on the spectrum and got the same answer - too early to tell. our paed also said that the development of children with asd is far more indivial than the development of NT children (who develop all in a more same(ish) predictable way) and it is not really possible to predict where a child with Asd at 4 will be in a couple of years time. only time will tell.
