Best iPad apps for autistic child

Hi,

Have just got an iPad for Xmas! Part of aim it was so DS (just turned 6) could do things like learn to write as he really responds to computers but very reluctant to use a pencil. He will use his DS stylus though.

I would like any recommendations for good educational iPad apps for an autistic 5/6 year old particularly those to do with writing/drawing. He has a stylus for the iPad so apps that use that would be good too

Not sure specifically for your childs needs but we got an ipad in the Autumn and did a search on mumsnet and lots of archived posts on this issue that you may find helpful.. There are so many it is difficult to know what would be right for your child.. our dd has SLD and is enjoying some basic communication cards and a puzzle one called Tozzle which she loves..

This link may be helpful too.. Good luck!

Sorry but realized that I had posted it with names etc. and had to get MNHQ to delete it.

First I must say that I have not tried any of these apps as I have just got an ipad and must first learn how to load the apps on.

However, this list was recently sent to me by a support group. It was written by one of their members. I think her dd is around the same age as yours.

  1. iConversation - ConversationBuilder by mobile education store
(2.49).
  1. iSentence - Sentence Builder by mobile education store ((about
2.49).
  1. iQuestion- Question Builder by mobile education store (2.49)
  2. Story Builder by mobile education (3.99)- havent used this yet, but
looks very good (cartoons). Should improve (a) paragraph formation. (b) improve integration of ideas and (c) improve higher abstractions by inference. Having the audio clips helps audio processing.

5.Casey's Contraptions 1.99 (brilliant and helps children understand
physics through game play). There are more than 70 levels- dd loves
it and is learning how to problem solve Great thing about these fun
physics games is that there are several ways of solving the problem so
children don't get so fixated.

  1. Analogies 4 kids (69 pence) - for cognitive skills work. Dd has
been working with this.

7.Star Walk (2.99). Gives an interactive astronomy guide. Brilliant app
for learning about size and make up of planets, constellation, pictures
from Hubble space telescope. Dc love it. They can see the
map of the world- cities lit up at night as well as co-ordinates of our
home.

Spelling apps:

Dd has done very well using:

  1. iWriteWords by gdiplus ( free iapp) - fantastic and a must!!! Dd
couldn't hold a pen, or trace, but she learnt how much pressure to put on the screen in order to trace letter and numbers. It's a fun app as the letters and numbers make a noise as they go done the drain. Also this app is very friendly as tracing doesn't have to perfect. Totally recommend that you try this one.
  1. Kindergarden.com I also got more than 20 different free iApps
from Kindergarden.com - emotions, earth science, shapes, places, instruments, sports, eat, fruit & nuts, alphabet, actions, play, wear, vegetables, vehicles, zoo, healthy habits,, what rhymes?, what does not belong?, which go together?, Receptive identification 1, receptive by class, receptive by feature, receptive by function, receptive combined, etc. Dd has learnt a lot from these.
  1. Natural Learning Concepts (Supply free iapps) for autistic
children and free material). Dd did well with this iapp from Natural Learning Concepts helps children to sort and categorize. ~These are similar to Kindergarden.com iapps but encourage the child to focus and spot the odd one out. A good app: www.nclconcepts.com
  1. Stories2Learn (9.99) - helps social story writing. Havent used this
one yet
  1. Drawing Pad (1.49). Great as kids can select to draw with chalk,
crayons , paint, pencils. Children can also add stickes, pics of cars, planes, flowers to their drawing very creative. Another must for the children for hand eye skills and imagination.
  1. Draw free (free iapp)- kids and adults

Music iApps

  1. ixylopphone music app called play along to songs and adjust
tempo.
  1. virtuoso piano iapp- keyboard- very good and useful in teaching
how to play the piano.

Reading stories iApps:

Cat Lite The cat in the Hat, by Dr.Seuss. Children can either, have
it read to them, read it themselves or have it on auto-play. Dd loves
this.

Wow, thanks for all suggestions I will try some of them. I found a good app myself called Autism Lite. It is basically a diary for autistic kids so you can track their behaviour what triggers it etc. I think it will be especially useful as we are hoping to start ABA. It could also be a useful way of providing evidence for things like startements, DLA

There is an app called Autism Apps which has lots of suggestions sorted into categories. I've found several my daughter loves from there. It also allows you to recommend apps. Try the netbuddy website Netbuddy.org.uk which has a whole section devoted to ipod/pad apps and IT.

Ipod & Ipad best things we've ever bought for our dd!

This topic was awesome! Thank you! We now have a pile of new fab apps. My children love anything by DuckDuckMoose. For writing try Alphabet World.

TwinkleWunkleChristmasStar · 01/01/2012 17:30

Just to add the Autism Apps has a lot of the ones suggested on other sites so is worth loading to start with!

My eight-year old is currently using a Zero Stylus pen for his iPad. It's actually pretty reliable as far as stylus pens go, since it has managed to be pretty accurate when my son is doodling. Hope this helps.
