My child of 11months nearly a year is crawling dragging his L leg and not weight bearing

My child was born in the frank breech position and we have recently had a second scan on his hips to see if that could have been the problem of him dragging his left leg, However the x-ray results came back clear which I am obviously please about,

However after taking him to the doctors who couldn't do an accurate examination of him (my baby is not very well with a cold and made sure the whole doctors new about it).

The doctor did notice that he keeps crossing his legs and scissoring them has anyone else's baby done this? I know this can be a sign of CP and am obviously very worried.

We have another doctors appointment next week so the doctor can do more tests when my son is feeling better and was hoping if anyone could give me some clues as to what it might be and have they experienced this with their own child?

Hi there,

Sorry do not know anything about CP. My DS is also 11months old he too had 2 scans on his hips to check they were ok as he had at one point been breach but turned himself round. He is not crawling as he is absolutely enormous and I think he is just too heavy to get himself moving he has been trying though. Try not too worry I am sure the hip scan would have picked something up if there was a problem.

One of my twins drags his right leg when he crawls, and he has just started taking a few steps at 22 months and still limps/drags the leg. He is seeing a physiotherapist who doesn't think there is anything much wrong.

Does he seems strong in that leg? If you lay him on his back and push his legs, does one feel weaker than the other? Is it smaller, suggesting lackof muscle development?

Did they check for hypermobile joints? If he doesn't like to weight bear this is also a possibility.

My DD has a mild form of CP but didn't scissor her legs and crawled 'normally' albeit late. However, my DS (who has no physical problems) crawled using one knee and dragging the other leg until he was 15 months - very odd it was too!

I hope they can give you some answers soon - nothing worse than worrying about the possiblities at this stage. Physio would be very helpful if only for assessment at this stage.

Were there any birth problems, which could have caused oxygen starvation? Also was he premature?
If the answer to these 2 questions are no then it is unlikely (but not impossible) he has CP.
If you haven't already been, ask to be referred to a physio and the paediatrician. They will have more of an idea about what could be the problem with your DS ( it may be a very simple issue which resolves itself)

DS was breech (which actually saved our lives) but due to birth trauma he has CP.
Good luck, nothing more worrying than thinking that there may be a problem with your child x

Both my boys were in the breech position when I went into labour but were delivered by CSection.

When they started crawling, one of them dragged himself along the floor using just one arm and one leg. The other arm and leg were limp iyswim. It was very odd to see.

CP was ruled out. He also had hip scans and they can back clear. Eventually I was told he had hypermobile joints.

Good luck with your appointment next week. x

The person I found best to see was the physio. Doctor saw dd1 who was dragging leg loads of times and told us she was find. She has very tight tendons and needs inserts.

i use to drag one leg crawling as a baby and when i first set off walking i use to swing a leg and my brother didnt crawl or walk till he was over 2 we are both fine so it doesn't always mean anything serious, we do have hypermobility in the family x goodluck x.

Thank you for all your replies,

The leg-creases are out and one leg feels slightly different although i am not sure if that is my imagination.

The doctor was unable to make much progress and check for hyper-mobility although i am going to ask him next Thursday if he could test for it.

My son was born by C-Section as they found out he was breech luckily before going into labour and it was luckily problem free. MY son was born 5 days before his due date.

When i try to encourage my child to weight bear he stands on his tip toes and almost whimpers like he is in pain although after much persistence is starting to hold his weight more. (My son has never had a walker)

My son was born wedged breech and six weeks early his feet were wedged into my pelvis so he was in a squatting position. Was born by CS section.

He used to bring his knees up to either ear and it was like carrying a little ball around with us :)

Even know at 6 when he sleeps or sits at odd times subconciously his leg is thrown right up in the air past his ears a gymnast would be jealous Grin I guess he is still using his feotal position for comfort.

He had hip xray and they said fine but he can move his hips which looks like full circle

I did get him a walker and a bouncy swing seat for him to strengthen his legs by pushing :)

Hi don't know is this will help but my son is now 2 never had any problems crawling but took his time walking and even after that he is still not sable falls over a a lot dragging his left leg not using his fingers properly ect.
After seeing the doctors he was diagnosed with something called left side hemi syndrome (weakness on the left hand side)

cd19882011 · 28/12/2011 22:04

Hi samira837 I don't suppose you could give me any information on hemi syndrome please?

Hi CD don't really have that much info as I am just starting off this journey my self! But will tell u everything I know!! Plus u are in luck as I JUST got off the fon with his doctor!

My ds2 started having fits at around 3-4 weeks old nothing big just small ones had all the tests but could not find anything and the fits stopped so he was discharged. When he started 2 crawl we could see that one side leg was dragging and when he started to stand and walk it was like he was on ice slipping and falling...hmm...2 make a long storey sort he had a lot off test done and he is now dx with left side hemi syndrome which basically means weakness on the left hand side this could be done to that his brain just developed that way or that he had a small stroke

He is now having physiotherapy and is doing gra8t

Hop this help xxx

I was breech as a baby, late crawling & fell over a lot walking, then eventually diagnosed at 2 yrs with congenital dislocation of the hips. As it was present at birth could have been picked up with an ultra sound scan

Totally treatable and I'm fine now. However it's a lot easier to treat if you catch it as a baby. Both my babies are having/had an ultra sound scan on their hips to check for it as I had it, which has been easy to arrange at the local hospital, might be worth asking for this check to be done?

Thank you for your post,

We have had two scan's on my child's hips which have both come back clear

There is a condition called Hemiplegia which sounds like the term 'left side hemi syndrome' that Samira is referring to. There is an organisation called Hemihelp which you can google which is really useful.
