Suddenly stopped smiling/eye contact?

My DS is only four-months-old, so very early days yet, but in the last week he has done everything to avoid eye contact with me, and hardly smiles. He's been through a lot with colic/reflux, but even during his worst days, he's always been easy enough to make giggle or smile, but not now.

Do I need to look further into this, or is it a normal stage of baby development? We saw a pediatric GI the other day, who concluded "colic and reflux" but not GERD. He termed my DS a "difficult baby, who will always have an edge". All day long my son rubs his ankles against one another, as if he's in discomfort, or as if he's frustrated, but the crying jags have all but ceased.

Not an expert but my DD did this at 4 months as well. It coincided with a lot of developmental stuff going on - I think she was just preoccupied! She was trying to stand, roll over, sit, grasp objects and other stuff I can't remember

I think 4 months is too early to spot anything much. Keep an eye out for milestones by all means but try not to worry. Xmas Smile

Here's the thing: I'm in the US, where the rotavirus vaccine is routinely administered. DS was colicky from the get-go and showed signs of silent reflux from an early age. We delayed his vaccines until three months, by which point the colic and reflux were almost done, and then a week after the vaccines--boom, his reflux went into overdrive, and he has been miserable in his body since. The penny finally dropped today, and the manufacturer's website urges caution in giving the rotavirus vaccine to infants born with a GI condition. I just hope we can get back on track.

What I would do is go to your GP with your concerns over the vacine for him to at least give your DS a thorough check over and at least put your mind at rest.

Both my children at that age were more observant to the world around them at that age. It suddendly dawned on them there was more around that just mum or dads face :) Also their legs went like the clappers rubbing when they were excited on spotting something it seemed to me it was a signal that they would be off and running soon! It was true enough because they were soon rolling and crawling after that :)

I would get a second check though.
