Does anyone elses school do Activate?

Dd3 moved schools at Easter and her new school do Activate every day for 15 minutes, 10 mins in the morning and 5 in the afternoon.

Dd3 has also been doing some physio most days since the early summer.

Something quite amazing has happened to her, she is becoming much more co ordinated, her balance has improved hugely and her muscle tone. She has even begun to be able to use a knife and fork!!

Obviously it is probably a combination of the exercises which is helping her but after reading "Disconected Kids" which is all about working to improve the weaker side of the brain I am beginning to think that the Activate program is really worth looking into.

I read a small article about it yesterday which mentioned strengthening the connections between the two sides of the brain but wondered if anyone had read anything about it anywhere.

Am very curiousXmas Smile.

I haven't heard of Activate, but I'm a huge fan of all this stuff. Brain gym too.

There are loads of '10 mins a day' exercise programs which are likely to help lots of kids - but very few schools that do it.

Do you have a link for it?

I just googled " Activate in the classroom" indigo and read some stuff, it uses brain gym and some Dore stuff I think.

I think I am just a bit blown away by the progress Dd3 has made reccently, I caught her using a knife and fork to cut some meat the other day, we don't usually mention cutlery because it just leads to friction but we always lay the table for everyone and there she was using it!!

Also she stood on one foot the other day at swimming to wash her foot in the shower and my friend commented that she was balancing really well.

I have been thinking about trying to get school to do some of her physio with her but if it is the Activate that is causing the progress maybe I should ask for more of that.

I really wanted to do the program from the "Disconnected Kids" book but she is so uncoperative at home and we are already doing physio and OT so if I can pass some over to school it would be a great benefit to us.

Ha, it not only uses Dore and Brain Gym - it also uses INPP. No wonder it works :)

Wonder if there's any way I can convince school to try it......

Ineedchristmascake · 16/12/2011 16:43

What is INPP indigo? It must be good if you are impressedXmas Grin.

INPP is retained reflex therapy which loads and loads and loads of us rave about.

Influences

The pioneering research and therapeutic work carried out by Peter Blythe and Sally Goddard-Blythe of the Institute for Neuro-Physiological Psychology on the primitive and postural reflexes, neurological developmental delay and its remediation by movement.

Honestly, this Activate looks seriously good.

My Ds's school does Activate to motivate ( not special needs tho). We had a new HT start Sep and she implemented it, whether it works I'm not sure- we have a lot of the older children (9/10)try to sneak off to the toilets when it's time after lunch for them to do it. ( I'm a mid-day superviser)

Oh wow, I am really excited now [is that sad].

Dd3 loves doing it and they seem really committed[sp] to it. Fancy it using RRT Indigo I have read lots on here about it being really usful, in fact I think you and I have spoken about it before, sadly I am not in a position to pay for it but if the Activate is doing similar stuff then I will go and ask for more I think.Xmas Grin

moonmother It is implemented from Reception at Dd3's school and as far as I know all the children take part. It seems very much a part of the school day.

DDs school do 'Activate' and that is MS

it's her favourite part of the day!

Ineedchristmascake · 16/12/2011 17:23

Yes Dd3's school is mainstream, it is additionally resoursed[sp] for children with physical disabilities.

It is an extremely inclusive school and totally opposite to where she was before. The HT is very forward thinking and seems to be constantly on the lookout for ways to enrich the children's lives.

My ds's school do it for 10 mins every morning (state, mainstream). All the kids love it!

oodlesofdoodles · 16/12/2011 20:07

Sounds great, can you do it at home?

Lougle · 16/12/2011 20:13

DD1's school doesn't do activate. They do 'Rainbow Road' though, which she loves.

Ineedchristmascake · 16/12/2011 20:42

oodles I am going to ask that question in January.
I am also going to ask if she can do extra at school or some of her physio/OT exercises and then we can do something else at home.

This looks like the page for it.

It doesn't have any prices on it - but I don't think it'll be cheap to buy.
