my dh has recently put in a claim for carers allowance,for ds who gets dla mrc/lrm, now weve not heard anything yet so i phoned them and i got a very strange answer which has left me thinking that they have declined it, the man on the phone said that he couldnt discuss the claim with us untill we had recieved our letter ????

it doesn't mean you've been turned down, they are not supposed to discuss the result either way, it's the standard response.

Also you have said that your dh put in the claim and that you phoned them. They will only talk to him.

Alison, I think that maybe you need to get higher rate DLA in order to apply for carers allowance but I am no expert. I have just printed off the forms to apply myself and it does stipulate that that is one of the criteria. Sorry I hope I am mistaken.

They always say that to you. They said it to me and we got dla and carers, don't worry.

Remember that carer's allowance is only payable if the carer earns under £100 per week (barring certain expenses).

So, if your DH earns less than £100/week, he should claim

If you earn under £100/week, you should claim.

If neither of you earn under £100 per week, you'll get what's called 'underlying entitlement' but won't get any money.
