not sure if this is the right section to post in as ds2 hasnt been diagnosed and we still dont know if there is anything diagnosable wrong but he has been under camhs for 18 months and things are still bad at school.

i am going in to see them at long last this afternoon. have struggled to get a meeting.
one issue is that the only subject ds2 seems any good at and hasnt given up on is music. But , each term he has been moved down in all his subjects including music. He feels he is now in a group too low for his ability in music and its hindering him. School say its because its attached timetable wise to other subjects i.e if you move down in english you then have to move down in music aswell to fit the timetable.
seems crap to me. can i do anything do you think ?

The maths teacher has had him on report for a month and now hes on 'zero tolerance' i.e will be sent straight out if he is distracting others / talking which is what she complains he does. on the other hand ds2 has been trying to go to school with gaffa tape to stick over his mouth so as not to talk.

You don't need a diagnosis to be on the SEN register - you just need to have special educational needs - which it sounds like he does.

So I think you need to be talking to school about the whole picture. About why he struggles in every subject besides music and what school can do to support him.

Even if he's in the wrong set for music, the teacher should still be giving him appropriate (ie harder) work. But there is not much the school can do about the timetable.

So think about what you'd like school to do to help him, think about what would help him, and come along with some reasonable suggestions......

Is he being investigated for ASD type stuff?

Is home educating an option?

Is the school to noisy / smelly / busy for him?

Is he getting bullied / teased?

Is he bright?

Does he have any friends?

I can understand their timetable issue, but agree that if he is moved to a different set to accomodate the schedule, he should still be given appropriate level work in music to keep him progressing.
