Put this in behaviour/development topic but didn't get any responses so thought I would try in here....
Does anybody know of any intense SALT courses run for children with speech disorders? I know they do these kind of courses for children who stammer but I can't find anything for other speech problems.
TIA

Have a look at Risca Solomon, Skybound Autism Therapies. I know she runs week residential courses and I think she is Talk Tools trained. There's been a previous thread about her on here. May not be what you're looking for but worth a look Smile

What speech disorder does the child have? What are their main difficulties?

Sorry I'm only just getting back to this thread but thank you for your replies.

Mess - DS doesn't have autism so I'm not sure that could work for him, thanks for the suggestion though.

Pleasant - there's no particular label for DS's speech disorder, although it seems to be pretty unique to him. That, coupled with DS's stubbornness is making him difficult to treat. He doesn't have any other special needs. I try my best to do as much of his therapy at home with him, but 4 days out of 7 he's not receptive to it at all and I don't want to push him too much for fear of him just giving up talking altogther. He (mostly) does really well in his SALT sessions (though he does have his moments and very rarely we have to just stop the session and give up cos it's just not worth it).
We only get 40 mins 1:1 every week and we get 8-10 weeks on with a 10-12 week 'consolidation' break, when he doesn't have any formal SALT at all. Although I can see their rationale for having breaks, I do think he needs more as just when he is really making progress in his sessions, they stop and sometimes we are starting all over again when he goes back up to 3 months later. They say 'it needs to be drummed into him' and this I can understand as he has got into bad habits with his speech that need to be undone, but we are all finding this difficult to do as he is often just unwilling - you can't force a child to talk can you! I just think he would respond really well to a several weeks long residential course where he concentrates on his talking with specialists every day but there doesn't seem to be anything like this around.

Sorry, that turned into a bit more of a 'letting off steam' post!

I have never heard of intensive course but I do find trying to do small amounts everyday helps. My ds has severe verbal dyspraxia - he has just turned 4. Your right you can't force it - I try and find words to practice around his current interests - thunderbirds at the moment. I was told that the breaks are for development but it's not - it just funding Sad.
