We have known for some time that DD has problems with spelling/writing/Maths. ( she's well ahead of her year in reading!)

DD is now on the schools list to see the Ed. Psych. To get a dx. of Dyslexia.

The SENCO team are working with DD in school & doing more training to help DD & other DC.

I would just like to know if anyone could suggest a good book on Dyslexia.
& any other information that i should know!

TIA x

Is That My Child is the best book about dyslexia.

This is my website about dyslexia - but I need to update it Blush

Basically Dyslexia is not an education problem - ie it is not something that can be helped by better teaching.

It is a physical / medical problem - which you can do lots and lots and lots to help - by finding out what is causing her problems and fixing it.

An EP views it as an educational problem, and so will not help your DD at all. All he will do is suggest compensating strategies, and tell you unhelpful obvious things like 'DD has a poor working memory'

An EP won't test your child's eyesight, or hearing or anything else. And EP won't be interested in finding out why your child struggles - because that is not the philosophy they believe in.

Dyslexia is a man made problem, about having problems with a man made communication system, the visual notation of speech, or decoding and recoding the graphic symbols society chooses to represent the sounds of speech. Dyslexia is a social construct.
Dyslexia is language dependent
There are two typa of dyslexia, Alexia (acquired dyslexia) caused by brain injury, substance abuse, stroke, dementia, or progressive illnesses; and Developmental Dyslexia which has a genetic origin, and three cognitive subtypes: auditory, visual, and attentional.
Most children have Developmental Dyslexia, which can be caused by an auditory processing disorder, a visual processing disorder, an attention disorder, or any combination of the three.
Ideally dyslexia should be assessed by an multi-discipline team, an audiologist, an optometrist, and a psychiatrist to assess thew various underlying issues which can cause the dyslexic symptom.
Unfortunately we have to rely educational psychologists who are not qualified to assess or diagnose any of the possible underlying causes.

Thank you for the info.Smile

My DS1 (20) has HFA (ASD) & dysgraphia. So i know alot about his SN.

She's under a consultant and has had her hearing checked.
Also, her eyes tested and is now wearing glasses, which has helped with her reading/written work.

It took her until 8 to tie her shoe laces. She didn't read until she was 7.( now ahead of her year).
She writes loads, stories, songs, diary. The only thing is it's spelt wrong, back to front, little grammer or caps, fullstops.
Maths, time tables, she finds hard to remember.

I will order Is That My Child and look at your website. Thanks Smile

Her problems seem to be remembering what she has learned. Maths is a biggy.(DD can learn it one day and forget the next, as a parent it can be fustrating sometimes!)

Thanks again, i will go and do my homework. Grin

It's not surprising that if he has ASD he also had dysgraphia and dyslexia. Is that my child will explain more :)

Your website, makes interesting reading.

Funny, how much these two things are the same, but different, IYSWIM.

Both have problems with writing, spelling. DS1 is an electronics engineer and reading electronics/physics at uni.

We were always told that DS1 didn't have dyslexia.Shock

Thanks, i have ordered the book. Grin. thanks again.

We did lots of neuro work with DS1.Grin

I spent 1 year from scratch teaching DD to read.
