Posted before re DS's neuropathic pain. Yesterday commenced amitryptilane 25mgs at night --a whole night in bed for me 1st for 8 months he seems very laid back and no crying despite having a 90min journey both ways to school in wheelchair. He is very sleepy am I right to think this is normal when starting this medication? We have had a few smiles :-] (can't do
smiley faces)

Yes, I have now moved taking mine to 5-6pm to get better sleep as I was finding it hard to get to sleep much before 1am when I was taking it at 7-8pm. I have upped mine from 10mg to 20mgs.

HTH

:) great he is feeling more at ease and you are getting some sleeeeep!

Yes it is normal. DD has morning dose 10mg to take edge off and evening dose 25mg but she takes this 3 hours before she is due to sleep. It also takes her a while to come round. She is awake but similar to not having that caffiene fix in the morning so dont worry if he is a bit dozy first thing either xx

Good to hear he is smiling again :)

Saying that she is an adult with a dose of 25mg. If you find he is way to sleepy all day it may be worth asking to try a low split dose morning and night? or just a slightly lower one at night to see if you have the same calming effect. :)

That's quite a high dose to start with - I'm only on 10mg, though could take up to 25mg.

And yes, it really knocks you out. I felt totally detached from my body at first and, even a couple of months in, I still wake up very groggy. It's been brilliant, not waking up in the night with my feet, elbow or neck in pain and not being able to get back to sleep because I can't get comfortable, though. I'm down to one restless night a week, instead of one good night a week.

I'm on amitriptyline at 50mg a night, not for pain though, and it does leave you feeling very sleepy especially in the first few weeks!

I sometimes find it helpful to deliberately take it an hour or so earlier than I would normally go to bed, so the effects are lessened by the time I need to get up.

Dunno if I'm being helpful just thought I'd share my experience incase it was remotely useful!
