Should I be asking for an ed psych?

We think ds (5.5) has pathological demand avoidance. He has been seen by comm paed who has referred him onto CAHMS for further investigation.
When paed asked me how he was at school I said he had 'a few problems but is fine really' because that is the impression teachers gave to me.
However, I found out recently that he is having small group 'social communication' sessions with the senco. So, I thought I'd better go and speak to his teacher and get a clearer idea of how he is.
The meeting started with her giving me the usual platitudes we've heard before "he's not the worst in the class, there are others I'm worried about too, he will probably just 'get it' eventually" (this is her idea of being positive- I call it avoiding the real issue). But finally, with some in depth questioning, she said that he has problems listening and having genuine reciprocal conversations. He also hates 'being looked at in a particular way' and that some children do 'look at him to wind him up'. He can't take turns and finds it difficult to stop shouting out answers to questions, he hates it if he doesn't get his own way over everything. He has no empathy either.
I just wonder if when we go to the camhs appt they will say, 'lets get an ed psych to look at him, then we'll wait to see what they say' and we'll be at the end of the waiting list for that. We have already had family support before we were referred to the paed so it's taken us nine months to get this far and will probably be about a year by the time we actually get to see camhs.
If they are likely to suggest an ed psych then should I ask to be referred now?

You can ask all you like - you know school won't refer him unless they're forced to.

Not because they're being mean or obstinate - just because they can send about one person a year to the EP - and as your child hasn't thrown any chairs / killed anyone this term - he's not the top of the list. :)

What the teacher is describing is ASD behaviour, and the EP won't say anything you couldn't get from research yourself on MN the internet.

i don't think camhs usually refer to ep. (if you are seeing the right person at camhs they will likely have similar quals anyway) there is nothing an ep could say that would be different. and an ep wouldn't usually dx, whereas in some areas, camhs can and do (or they reprot back to paed who does).

that said, i would ask the class teacher/ senco for a written report stating exactly what you were told at the meeting, and take it with you to camhs. and forward a copy to the comm paed.

ep unnecessary as you are already in the system towards dx. with a dx, you can request school get advice from the ep if they require guidance on how best to support ds.

does he have an iep running? have they got him currently listed as sa+? (just curious as they see issues with socila communication etc) do you have a copy of his iep? do you know what the tragets are?

if he does have an iep, take a copy of that to camhs as well.

if on SA+ then usually an EP or some proffessional is involved?

The only other way to get an EP in there is if you apply for a statement as if they agree to assess an EP is sent to the school to make a report for the LA.

Camhs wont request an EP to visit. But will visit the school themselves to get an overall picture of your son and how he is faring there.

madwomanintheattic · 09/12/2011 17:18

i assumed sa+ because of the paed involvement, rather than ep?

yes madwoman I see where you are coming from :)

I think I remember from the OP other thread that he wasnt on anything and she wasnt aware that he was having social skills at the time, so I dont think the pead is from the school side of things? I could be wrong though
