just watching "my child's not perfect" and there's one selective mute the programme's focusing on.
One of my relatives is a selective mute (y6) and I was wondering at what age they grow out of it?

Some children who have selective mutism do not grow out of it and become adults with selective mutism, social anxiety, agrophobia, depression......

Some children with selective mutism may also have autistic spectrum conditions which again may result in the same outcome left untreated.

oh dear. Fingers crossed then. It is a very wierd condition. I don't see her very often but don't think there are other problems as well.

I have a friend with a daughter who has selective mutism & some other anxiety behaviours but no other diagnosis. She is in her final year of primary school & she answered when her name was called in the register for the very first time a couple of weeks ago. She has an awful lot of input and I don't think anyone thinks she will grow out of it but are hoping she'll develop different ways of dealing with her anxiety.

Congrats to your friends dd. That's quite an achievement! I hope she continues to progress..
