Statement reviews

In DS's statement is says that it must be reviewed at the end of this term/year.

School has not said anything to me so far. When I called the SEN department, locally, that deals with statements it said that school has to organise it.

I am just wondering, is the statement invalid if it hasn't been reviewed??

Should I get on to the school, or will they organise it? I feel like I am constantly nagging them at the moment ...

I would be having a word with the SENCO as you should also receive a form to fill in (detailing your views) around 2 weeks prior to the Annual Review itself.

An annual review is normally done around a year after the finalised statement has been issued. School normally organise statement reviews.

Yup school should organise it BUT if the authority is anything like the one I work in we are STILL waiting on Statement review amendments from the previous year. So Reviews are now long overdue because we have nothing to review because the amendments have not been typed by someone in the LEA.

So that could be the reason it is outstanding.

Or .......

the SENCo is a lazy arse. Annual reviews can require quite a lot work beforehand...

Is it a y6 review that should be done in May?

Hopefully a chat with the senco will sort it.

No. DS has just started reception. The statement was written about a year ago, just before he started nursery.

The school should be holding an annual review. You will receive a report on your child and a form to fill in. You should get this 2 weeks before the review date. To be honest, I think some time in the Spring term would be best. Christmas term is a bit early - particularly in Reception as most children take some time to settle.

I would say if you haven't heard anything by Easter then ask the SENCO when the AR will be. Don't worry. The statement is still valid and is unlikely to be changed unless there are some major changes until your child is in year 6.
