mouth problem, any thoughts?

My son is six and has ASD. He's not very verbal and not always very co-operative. He's had the same grotty viral cough for a few weeks that everyone around here has had but the GP confirmed on Monday that his chest is clear and now he's finally coughing less than he was. His left eye came up on Monday night like he had viral conjunctivitis and he rubbed it like mad and it looked like he had a black eye (this has happened before with him) but then on Wednesday I noticed that there's an injury just under the eye, a sore crusty patch that's been coming and going but he won't let me get a good look. Today he's developed a problem with his mouth. He's been pulling at his tongue and trying to wipe it on tissues. Amazingly he did stick it out to show me but I couldn't see anything obvious. He hasn't eaten much today which is unusual for him but then I suppose if his mouths sore... Does anyone have any thoughts on what could be going on?

Could the crusty spot be a cold sore?
It is possible to get the cold sore virus (herpes simplex) in the eye. Amhik :'-(

4nomore · 03/12/2011 22:21

Oh right, nasty :-( Well I don't know much about coldsores as I've been lucky enough to never suffer but yes, I suppose it could be that. Last couple of days it's looked red raw and awful in the morning (I assume it goes crusty in the night and then he attacks it) then throughout the day it improves in appearance until at bedtime it's hardly noticeable. Does that sound like it could be?

Does he get excema (sp) DD and DH do and if they are run down or scratch themselves they come up with it in that area. I am thinking he may have nicked the skin with his finger nail when rubbing perhaps?

4nomore · 04/12/2011 14:02

He stuck his tongue out again today and this time I can see a sort of "Scuffed" area near the tip of his tongue but it doesn't look enough to justify his carry-on but you just can't tell can you? His eye is no worse today, maybe a little better even. Have managed to get a GP appointment for tomorrow morning anyway.

mooth ulcer? My ds gets them sometimes and he is generally awful until they go.

roundcornsilkvirgin · 04/12/2011 14:05

or a mouth ulcer even Grin

It could be anything to be honest! Generally he's an absolute trouper but then certain things get to him and then he's all over the place - no rhyme or reason as to what bothers him and what doesn't. I did offer him some Bonjela stuff for the dodgy looking patch but he wasn't into that idea Xmas Confused

The cold sore.virus in the eye is just like any other eye infection really - the problem being that it lingers because antibiotics don't work on it.
And i don't get cold sores either so no idea where it came from!

4nomore · 05/12/2011 10:45

He has oral thrush. We have drops for it now but goodness knows how I'm going to get them into him Xmas Sad

OP posts:
starfishmummy · 05/12/2011 15:19

Good luck with the drops.

madwomanintheattic · 05/12/2011 15:33

ha, i was just about to say it sounds like thrush! Grin

good luck x

4nomore · 05/12/2011 17:14

Do you have experience of (oral) thrush then Madwoman (God knows I have the experience at the other end but not in the mouth...). I'm spooked 'cos everywhere it says that anyone healthy over 1 shouldn't be getting it unless they've had tons of antibiotics - which my boy hasn't. Mind you lately he has been very keen on sticking his hands and feet in the toilet which probably doesn't help anything... Having an absolute mare getting the drops in too Xmas Shock

i was going to ask if he is the type that likes to have a rummage in the pants department... Grin

it is usually teenies, but entirely understandable in some older kids too.

good luck with the drops.

Thank-you, that's re-assuring although I don't know why I need re-assuring when just the other day I was marvelling at how he seemed to be surviving using himself as a human petri dish (as I chased him around the house with babywipes, trying to minimise the spread of whatever he'd found in his pants, in "the bowl" or in the dankest corners of the garden)

If he's been ill, his immune system will be all over the place tbh. Does he eat a lot of yeasty/wheaty products? You could try cutting back and try a decent pro-biotic (I know, I know, good luck with that, right? Wink)

4nomore · 05/12/2011 18:45

His staple food is vegemite sandwiches Xmas Blush although I've never been sure how real the link is between a yeast by-product and the actions of a living yeast. He used to drink Actimel, I think I need to see if I can bring it back into favour.

OP posts:
WilsonFrickett · 05/12/2011 19:02

Yeast! It's the demon yeast I tell ye!! Xmas Grin

I don't think it makes a difference when everything's in good working order, but when his system is out of kilter then I do think it can make a difference. At least, it does with the other kind of thrush and me Blush.

4nomore · 05/12/2011 19:13

That's his B-vitamins right there Xmas Grin. TMI but I've had more or less constant thrush since he was born, I control it, formerly with Daktarin (I'm allergic to Canestan) and then recently I've found I can keep it at bay with Bio-Fem Actigel - I don't eat Marmitey stuff so I can't cut it out

OP posts:
WilsonFrickett · 05/12/2011 19:25

I should prob PM you this because it is seriously TMI but in for a penny

Get thyself to a heomopathic pharmacy-type place and get tea tree pessaries and a mega probiotic (like a capsule type thing, not a drink). Attack it from both ends and I guarantee you it will be gone in a week. While you're there, ask about tea tree ointment for DS (or is it very near his eye?) - I think it will clear it right up but you shouldn't take my word for it, especially if it is open and sore.

Poor wee mite (and you!)

dontrememberme · 05/12/2011 19:35

does he suck or mouth things? DS2 has had thrush over the last couple of years. He is 9 but still has a dummy & mouths lots of things.
Oral thrush gel & chucking out all his old dummys & a good disinfectant sorts it.

madwomanintheattic · 05/12/2011 19:38

and keep treating yourself as well, or you will be passing it backwards and forwards.

4nomore · 05/12/2011 19:49

He does suck and chew things from time to time (not to the extent he used to) so I'll try and clean those things off. I'll try and track down some tea-tree pessaries and I'll get some more probiotics (I've just used a course myself because I had to take a few days antibiotics following surgery... didn't zap the thrush though...) I've been using manuka honey on his eye and it is helping a lot but I can only get near it when he's asleep and he still gets in and gives it a good rub (with his often filthy paws) from time to time so it isn't completely cleared yet.
