red grapes, green grapes and ASD?

DS2 has been hyper for the last few days and is also waking at night, which is unusual for him. A chance remark from his 1:1 yesterday told me that he's been eating red grapes at snack time.He normally has green, which I send in, but has been in the specialist unit for the last week because his m/s class are play rehearsing and he finds it hard to cope. I would put the change in behaviour down to the break in routine, but he tends to be manic whenever he spends a day in the unit and we have been puzzled as to why this might be for a while now.

Anyone else's child react to red grapes? I know they're high in phenols, but so are bananas, and DS eats those occasionally with no problems. We've also run out of Epsom Salts for his bath, which I know are supposed to help with the detoxing of phenols.

No idea, sorry. Dd3 has never eaten a green grape, only red are allowed. She is regularly hyper so am watching with interest. Smile

I have looked into this a bit with my ds, as he was only ever eating red grapes.. I found out that red grapes contain a lot of copper (way more than green), when tested he was found to have too much copper and b/c of that was zinc deficient (Cu pushes Zn out). Both elements need to be balanced in a specific ratio, otherwise too much Cu is toxic.
We started supplementing ZInc and noticed an improvement in brain function, memory, thinking etc. So I think there is a link.

I haven't looked into whether the this is to do with the compounds in the red pigment (it could be), I originally suspected pesticides, but it could well be combo of the two factors.

sphil, you could also consider Mg tissue salts, they are taken internally and melt on the tongue

Forgot to add that since starting zinc, he is no longer interested in grapes at all, his diet is much more varied now, though this could also be due to being gluten free, who knows

He takes a magnesium supplement nightcat - we split the capsules and mix them into the sunflower spread he has on his bread. Its the one thing Ive noticed makes a real difference if he doesnt have it.

interesting.

dd1 loves red grape juice (she has it diluted, about 100ml juice/750ml bottle). she will drink far more when she has grape juice, instead of apricot/peach/cherry. dd1 has historically had huge issues with drinking, and it has literally taken us years to get to this point.

I don't think she is more hyper on the days (most of them, tbh - quantity of fluids stillbeing my main objective) where she has grape juice. But I will observe more carefully.

Sphil, I still think it's down to change of routine rather than grapes unless he is intolerant tothem of course. Why not try give him some red grapes at home? I'm sure you don't want to replicate the unwanted behaviour but it's the only way to find out. Food intolarence can cause all kind of issues and many people are not aware of them

DS loves grapes/raisins/oranges and used to have them at nursery all the time but we had to stop it because it affected him due to acid.

The green tiny ones are not so bad. But large green or red are a no go as are oranges, lemons, grapefruit and tomatoes. He says they burn his mouth. I cannot eat an orange either as it ulcerates my mouth we have an acidity problem at least that is what we have put it down to.

He also gets major tummy ache and diarrhea.

lisad123 · 03/12/2011 17:10

Mine eat both and can't say I see a huge difference in them.

sphil · 03/12/2011 19:33

I am hoping it's not the grapes - the specialist teachers already think I'm a first class loon about diet.

Oranges give Ds2 terrible diarrohea coff33pot.
