Ds2 (9, severe ASD/SLD) is toilet trained but still wets the bed most nights. Lately, for some unknown reason, he has taken to weeing on the carpet beside his bed. It seems to happen first thing in the morning, though I've just been to check and he's obviously done it earlier, as he's still asleep and theres a wet patch. Its almost like when cats wee in the same place over and over again - I guess its become a habit lkke many of the other things he does.

Any advice as to how I can stop this? And just as important, whats the best way of getting wee stains/ smell out of the carpet? We hired an industrial cleaner last weekend, but obviously there was little point as he's just gone back to doing it again this week.

DS did something similar. He has a tube map on his wall. If he wees on the floor, tube map comes down for that day. If he doesn't wee, tube map goes back up. Worked in 3 days for us, but you have to get something that your ds really likes.

Can't say it will work with your ds but might be worth a try.

Could you put a potty and an old rug in the area?

Pets at Home sell a spray cleaner which removes the smell of urine and it works on human urine too.

Gloria - I had thought about trying something like that. The trouble is, the only thing DS2 really cares about is the computer and I'm not sure he would connect weeing with the withdrawal of computer time - if there was something in his room, like your Tube map, it would work better because it would be more immediate.

Ilovedelia - I did wonder about putting his old portapotty in there and then gradually moving it out towards the bathroom (which is right next to his room). The old rug is a good idea.

Could he have a computer picture in his room that he has to get and give you in exchange for computer time?

You'd have to start out giving the computer sticker every day regardless of the weeing as he learns what it is fOr to start with.

Not pretending to 'know' that it will work but maybe it can trigger other ideas?

my brother, (going back many years) had a similar thing as he grew up and stopped wetting the bed his body new he should get up and go toilet but he didnt make it and ended up going by the door, turns out he though he had made it he was still mostly asleep.

if its deliberate consious to wee by ones bed cant help you butif its cause hes still out of it, waking him up a little early might solve it if its happeneing just before morning

Unfortunately I think it is a conscious thing as we caught him doing it just before his bath the other night. I think it may have started in the way you describe but has now (like so many of his repeated behaviours) turned into a habit.
