Dd1 is nearly 9. She had club foot at birth which was dealt with by physio. She sat late and never crawled. She didn't walk till after her second birthday. I tried really hard to get her referred but no luck and then later dx with autism. However she has had leg pain since she was 3 years old. We finally got to see physio last year and they discovered she has tight tendons in her legs. She had inserts in her shoes which helped for a while. However the pain is getting really bad again and physio has run out of ideas. She has now referred her to hospital for special made inserts but it's taking agggees!!
She's in major pain again and apart from meds and heat pads I really am stuck.
Anyone got any ideas??
No one seems to be able to tell us if any of the inserts will help or what else to try and what it could be. Help

Is the pain just in her legs as in the actual leg lisad? Or could it also be from the hip shooting down.

I am not experienced so its just a mum thing but dd has been in constant pain during active times, like PE, jumping, skateboarding etc. Also she keeps tripping and spraining her ankle (same leg)

Just been to docs. Her pain starts at the hip (actually pelvis area) but moves down shooting fashion and she has complained of top leg and knee pain. The doctor said she had too much 'play' in her ball joint and something to do with muscle tone is lax?

It's from knee downwards. I could understand if it hasn't been going on so long and also if it was after activities but it seems pretty constant Sad

when she was tiny they just said she had "clicky hips" she is 10 now. We have only started to persue and watch this. I do find though that cold packs work for her as opposed to hot. Dont know why other than perhaps if something is inflamed then the cooling of it may help?

Are there any physio excercises that might help loosen the tendon? Would botox help?

lisad123 · 23/11/2011 16:25

we have been doing the excercises often and she does swimming, horse riding and gymnastics, which all strengthen and stretch for muscles.

My ds had that to a v worrying stage, it was explained to me that his tendons stopped growing, the short of the long story turne dout to be that he also stopped growing in other areas.

A number of things you could consider: for my ds going gluten free eased off the tightness almost instantly (his feet/toes were so stiff that he was tripping over them). BTW, there is a logical explanation for this.

Other things that you could try is anything that works as a relaxant, eg Mg/B supplement, Mg tissue salts, epsom salts in the bath, there are also nice relaxing herbal drops by Vogel.

Recently I found out that stretching does work in an opposite way, ie the tendons will snap right back, better way is to apply pressure accross the tendon/muscle, which is what I have started doing on my ds. Also, small movements/slow exersice is better than fast and energetic.

For us, drs offered shoe inserts, but they didn't work.

ds2 has v mild CP (spastic diplegia) so tight tendons & ASD. Warm baths really help him, in fact we only do his physio stretches in the bath. He is able to tolerate it so much better & get better results doing it in water.
It does mean he is bathed twice a day but at least he doesnt smell!

DS2'S pain tends to be worse after excercise, so if he has a busy day he has a alot of pain during the night, we also really notice the difference if for any reason we have to skip his night bath.
Also ds2's physio has told us to limit the higher impact exercise as this aggrevates the pain in his ankles, so jumping is restricted to the trampoline only & we try to get him on the bike & swimming. Rather than running & jumping etc.

DS2 'S pain has got worse since they have reduced the size of his splints & the amount of support he has, the hope is that this will resolve in time as his mucles strengthed. Its a bit of a visous circle, more orthotic support gives better stability, balance & better foot position but doesn allow the muscles to do so much of the work so they end up perhaps not being as strong as they could be.
