I have been posting a bit and reading a lot. It has been really helpful as I had been feeling really isolated. I have ds15 who has HFA/AS quite severe OCD and dyslexia and dd 11. DS is in MS secondary with a very flexible approach. He is actually attached to a unit for students with physical disabilities but it works for him. School is going well but home is quite difficult as he still (even after 8 months inpatient treatment) has extensive OCD symptoms which mean that he gets little sleep and I get even less. Anyway glad to meet everyone on here and no doubt will be around a lot.

Welcome - and you've made my mind up to get my eyes tested. I read your OP as "I'm Jewish..." and I thought has she got the right section? Grin

Welcome! My son is 11. Diagnosed ASD aged 4. He's high functioning, more Aspie really. Last September (2010) he was dx with OCD. It's turned him into a different child. His education has ground to a half. We've tried Sertraline, then Risperidone and now Prozac. Initially, each of these drugs had a good effect but the first 2 had to be stopped due to side effects. The Prozac does nothing.

He's down for MS secondary in 2012 in a good schoolwork autism unit attachment. It's such a shame because he's. Right but the OCD has turned our world upside down.

Does your boy take any meds?

This iPad drives me nuts! Hope you can understand my above post!

Hi MissKittyEliza. I shouldn't say I'm pleased to meet someone in the same boat but you know what I mean. DS was on sertaline for about 4 years and I didn't think it was helping. His OCD then really deteriorated (which lead to his inpatient admission) and he was changed to fluoxetine (same as Prozac I think). He had a couple of weeks without anything during the changeover and his mood was terrible. As he was in a pretty bad place anyway, it made me realise just how much the medication was keeping a lid on things. Like your DS he seems to do well when first started on a new medication but the effect wears off. Risperidone has been mentioned as a future possibility but I am concerned as I have heard that it doesn't mix well with ASD. What kind of side-effects did your son get?

At first, he was good on it but then he got muscle stiffness. It got so bad, he was limping.

It's nice to meet you. I wish we could go back to "just" the ASD!

MissKittyEliza · 22/11/2011 09:07

Also, on the Risperidone, he was flat. He lost all interest in the very few things he used to enjoy and would sit on the sofa looking lost, saying, "I'm not sure what I should do, mummy"

HAD to stop it.

Sertraline caused that akithaesia? Where a person is constantly moving. He literally, could not relax/sit still. Not in a busy ten yr old kinda way.....in a demented dervish way Sad

Thanks for the info MissKittyEliza. Do you think it is worth starting a thread for OCD?
Thanks for the welcome everyone.

There have been one or two. Mostly talking about meds.

I'll happily join in if you start an OCD thread!
