asked me how old Ellie was, I said 4 and she asked what schools the girls went to.

Told her Ellie went to an SN School and she looked at me like I had said something awful!!!!

Actually it was nice I suppose as she couldn't believe Ellie went to an SN School, said she would never have had guessed

She went on to ask other questions about her, was al harmless and a nice lady but I'm sure she didn't believe me!!!!!

When she realised Grace and Ellie were twins she asked ............

"are you sure Grace just isn't a very bright child and you are comparing"!!!!!

lol lol

I thought it was quite funny!

She got a shock when she asked "is she an easy child, she looks it"?

she got a very brief explanation of Ellie's behaviour and sleep pattern.kept her quiet for a bit

Not sure why I posted that, bit of waffle really!!! Just thought it was funny that she thought it may have been a case of Grace being very very bright and me comparing!!! (lets forget the meningitis, hydrocephalus, epilepsy, all the DR's we see!!!!!)

Not everyone has any experience with SN though. Since Mumsnet, my understanding has broadened to realise that it can mean a whole host of things from fairly minor up to major life changing stuff.

coppertop · 03/01/2006 13:37

Bless her. I must admit though that even though I have 2 children with SN I really know very little about SN schools or what level a child needs to be at before they can get a place etc.

Oh I know she wasn't being funny, she was very nice

just sounded funny somebody questioning me on whether I was just comparing them!!!!

I get that reaction a lot- peoiple looking horrified when I say ds1 goes to a SN school. They then get told how wonderful it is and how happy we are that he is there and how much happier he is.

bright child you're comparing with ??? You're nicer than me I get irritated with those sorts of comments!

itllbelonelythisdavros · 03/01/2006 19:25

It doesn't sound to me like she was trying to be nice, but genuinely couldn't tell and was surprised. They do have their moments, our little darlings, don't they?

I had that when dd1 was first diagnosed with cp "are you sure?" "never mind they will be able to cure it soon" and one of my favourites " but she's so pretty"

anniebear · 03/01/2006 19:55

I have had a few recently of "you can see she is going to get there in the end isn't she and " "Oh she will have a totally normal and full life eventually won't she"

errrrrrr "NO"!!!!

They just don't get it! Of course it's fantastic that she is moving on and continues to develop week in and week out , but no, she is never going to catch up with Grace and will always have many problems

People just don't see the whole picture of course. They see a little pretty girl running round the play area chattering to people, (they don't know that she doesn't understand some of the things she says!!!)

As it has been said, people don't know much about SN and say things to try to make us (and them) feel better
