Arghhh. This is driving me crazy. We have went round in what seems like circles for 3 1/2 years. OT Diagnosed DS with DCD (dyspraxia) 2 months ago. Ive found this hard to accept, but finally started to come round and pick myself back up again, and then....
We went back to paed 2 weeks ago and she has suspects mild aspergers and auditory processing disorder. Been refered back to SALT for in depth assesment and back to the "wait and see game"
I like to be in control of things and hate uncompleted tasks, so im finding this really hard to deal with.
I just want to know what we are looking at so I can accept things move on from there.
I dont think i can cope with another year or 2 of he might have this or that :-(

Hi life... the best bit of advice I was given during the assessment process with Dd3 was to treat her as if she did have ASD because she showed so many signs of it.This was given to me by a mental health nurse at CAMHS. It enabled us to start using strategies which have been found to work with children on the spectrum.

By the time she was eventually dx'ed with ASD we had already put in to place lots of things to help her cope and moved her to a much more inclusive and clued up school.

It also made us feel like at least we weren't just sitting around waiting.

Good luckSmile.

ASD, ADHD, Dyspraxia, Dyslexia, (and possibly OCD and APD) all have so many overlapping symptoms that to a large extent you don't need to worry about which dx he gets.

The same types of treatments and therapies ( the ones I know you are doing from previous threads) help all those conditions. So it really doesn't matter whether he has DCD with traits of Aspergers, or Aspergers with traits of DCD....

Just keep going down the path you've started. You're doing all the right things.

Even when he gets a dx don't 'accept it'. Instead you need to look at the symptoms which are causing him the most problems, and then decide how you can help them. You can do this with or without a dx.

No great advice but I?m in the same boat more or less. DS had a diagnosis of DCD with traits of ADD a few years ago. We have been seeing a private OT for quite a while now who has diagnosed sensory and auditory processing issues. School have recently said that they see traits of mild ASD, something I agree with, but never sure if these symptoms could be explained by the other issues as he is very sociable and communicative.

I try and take the approach that Indigo has suggested in that if he was diagnosed with ASD today he still has the same symptoms as he had yesterday and I would carry on doing the same things as I am doing now.

However I?m not really successful at doing that ! I also hate the uncertainly and go over the ?Is he isn?t he? several times a day. I am seeing the paed in a few weeks where I am going to share the schools thoughts and see where we go from there. If the paed suggests going down the diagnostic route then I will do that as I see no reason not to. Havent decided what to do if the paed dismisses my concerns
