IEP Help... hours

Does anyone know much about IEPs?

I have DSs IEP from the Jnrs and its different (more grown up) than the infants. In the infants they detailed how many hours of support, activitites such as fine/gross motor work etc. His new one doesn't list any details on hours. It details what will help achieve an objective such as visual aid, white board, TA but?!

Should it detail that information? It appears very evasive. Some objectives can't be met as they say they can't support him after a certain time of day. So surely they shouldn't be on the IEP? They are also waiting on the outcome of the statement!?! Again, they should be basing it on now and what they can provide surely, not on what might happen.

Arrrrrgh!!! Angry

IEPs should usually have 3/4 targets that your ds will be working on. That will depend on whether he needs help with academic subjects or social skills etc. The IEP should state what the targets are, who will help to achieve the targets and how. The targets should also be SMART - Specific, Measurable, ATtainable, Relevant and Time-Bound.

Did you have a meeting with SENCO or teacher to discuss what ds targets is to be working on?

Our IEP did state how many times a week and for how long something will be done.

You are right though, the IEP should not state what cannot be met and if your ds needs help, they should be basing it on now, not what might happen - after all, it might take a long time before the Statement is issued.

Can you ask to see the school's SEN policy? Your LA should also have a policy on SEN. You should have a look and ask for an explanation on why it is not followed. Afterall, IEPs are not only issued for Statemented pupils.

what stage of statementing are you at, do you think school may be using this as evidence towards getting extra support?

Thanks Guys, Apologies I didn't come back on this - It got mixed in with statementing issues etc.

I'm on a losing battle with my SENCO on anything - I'm under the impression some parents have left school because of it.

I have another IEP which is apparently based on the Final Statement they have received, but only small and varied objectives, nothing as the amount detailed in the statement.
My understanding is, that if the IEP is being used as the basic target then a provision map should be created to show where the rest of the provisions in the statement are and how being met.

I've tried to completely ignore any SEN paperwork for just over a month to destress - really don't want to keep battling.

Oh well... back into the ring I go!
