IEP news at parents evening

I've just been to my daughter's parents evening and the teacher has said she recommends an IEP.

My DD is 7, in YR3. She is working at level 1a-1c in all core subjects. I knew she was behind and she has extra help from a TA in numeracy and literacy. The teacher said my DD zones out and struggles to follow instructions.

I offer lots of support at home and do lots with her and I obviously want the best for her. I would just like some information from other parents please!

What happens next?

Will she be assessed to pinpoint if she is dyslexic etc?

TIA

Could the zoning out be an 'absence seizure'?

I have come across the Auditory processing whilst looking up information over the last few days. I've got it on the list to mention to the GP on Wednesday. Thanks.

I've just googled 'absence seizures'. It's something else I will ask about. The teacher said DD will suck her fingers and in her words 'zone out'. She does suck her fingers at home, she has since a baby and I've tried everything to stop it. She mostly does it when she's tired or unwell. I've never noticed her going off in a trance though.

Sucking fingers is a clear sign of retained reflexes :) (Her baby reflex, the sucking reflex, hasn't disappeared as it should have)

Which most kids with these kinds of issues have.

I have both the doctors appointment and SENCo appointment in the morning so hopefully will be more enlightened tomorrow.

Just wanted to say thanks to everyone for their replies and support last week. It really helped. I will be back to pick your brains tomorrow no doubt. Smile

Gosh - I am really keen for DS to have one to one support - so I think its really good that your school is offering it. My DS has a statement and a diagnosis of CP so he really should have a TA I think!!

It must be a shock to go from not thinking there was much of a problem to suddenly being told that your child has an IEP and has special needs of some sort.

BUT on a positive note it sounds as though the school want to really help.

Sorry - just to add, it did occur to me ... my DS finds it very hard to concentrate in a busy environment, such as a classroom. There is so much noise going on and so many distractions he cannot concentrate.

Could this be why your daughter is zoning out at school, but not at home?
