IEP

Ds is in year 4 and I have just found out that he has had an IEP since year 2 - I'm sure I should have known about this way before? Aren't parents meant to sign these things each term and agree on what should be on the plan?

Not quite sure what I need to say to the school? Do I ask to be involved with it. It was shown to me by an external SENCO coordinator.

I thought it was normal for parents to be involved.. I certainly sign and agree to my ds iep.

I would talk to the teacher about it.

You are supposed to have regular reviews and have a copy of the IEP and sign both copies.

Have you had a meeting with the SENco?

I too found out years later that DS had been on the SEN register, with IEPs, since Y1.

I was always asked to sign something at parents evening - but I had no idea that I was signing an IEP, or that it was significant, or that he was on the SEN register.

This is really not good. Legally they have to tell you if they put your child on the SEN register.

Ask for an appt with the SENCO. And ask for an IEP review meeting.

I still have to ask for IEP review meetings. Otherwise they consider asking me to sign something at a parents evening to be sufficient.

Thank you all for your replies.

The only thing I have signed is permission for him to be talked about at SEN meetings. I know he has learning difficulties, so any help is good but I would like to know about it, and maybe be involved. I did notice that on his IEP it says that he should have 1 to 1 reading everyday - I know for a fact that this does not happen! Maybe this is why I haven't seen it?!

Had a meeting with an external SENCO yesterday to do more tests with ds. She showed me a copy of the IEP and explained what everything meant, it was then that I noticed that he'd had one since y2. Not really cross with school, just came as a surprise in the meeting yesterday!

What is a SEN register? I have never heard of this?

The SEN register is just a list of kids who are getting extra help at school.

It should be about 30% of the school.....

Def sounds like your DC is on the SEN register.

Yes you should know that your child has a IEP....your signature should be on all of them!! I would write to the school and ask for copies of these and then ask for a meeting with the SENCo!!

They must also let you know if any outside agencies are being brought in for your child!
