buggy/ wheelchair snow question

Hope someone can help. I need to make some space!

I have DD 3.5 who has cp and can't walk. At the moment we have a kimba spring buggy, an NHS wheelchair (we are looking into getting a sportier one) and a Phil and Teds.

Day to day we use the kimba and the wheelchair. I was hanging on to the Phil and Ted in case it would be better in snow (we have just moved to Scotland) but really is it worth it - will it even snow this year? Is a Phil in Ted any better in the snow compared to a wheelchair?

What were other peoples experiences last year?

We didn't have our Maclaren Major last year, and DS2 had a horrendous time mobility-wise. But I don't have a clue how we'll use the pushchair in the snow (and we're not even in Scotland!!) - I'm just going to hope that most of the paths are either packed down somewhat or cleared. We ended up driving last year on school runs, but I'm determined to walk as much as possible this winter.

Sorry, I suppose that wasn't very helpful. Just commiserating... Grin

I found fixed wheels better in snow. Can you lock the front wheel of rhe Phil and teds? Maybe a bike trailer you could drag like a two wheeled sledge. Mine loved getting dragged around by sledge last year but they got very cold.

I don't know about kimbas or wheelchairs, sorry but I do know that my 3 wheeler which had a locked front wheel was absolutley fine in the snow, we never had any probs with it.

Sorry if you are trying to get rid of phil and tedsGrin.

You won't stand a chance in soft snow with a wheelchair. DD has a wheelchair which has bigger front wheels than some chairs I have seen - and unless the snow is packed hard then she has to stay indoors. The only way to get a wheelchair along in anything soft eg. snow, sand etc is to drag it backwards - which is hard work over any sort of distance.

Hmmm... are we saying there is money to be made in a snowplow attachment for pushchairs and wheelchairs?? Grin

...wandering off to my workshop....

what bigbluebus said

we stay in , as it is impossible to get ds about in his wheelchair in the snow

bigbluebus · 08/11/2011 18:57

Yes Triggles some sort of ski attachment for wheelchair wheels would be good!!!

Thanks for all your replies, looks like it would be worth keeping hold of the P&T for now then. Hmm of to re arrange the house again. We just have so much equipment everywhere :(

Room for a shed or one of those big plastic storage things in the garden? You may be able to apply for funding from a charity if you can't afford to buy one - storing masses of equipment is a nightmare.
We had to convert our garage into a playroom when DD was little as by the time we had her standing frame, Jenks chair and all the SN toys we had been loaned in the living room there was hardly any room for us!!!
