Council panel meeting about DS SEN- confused

Apparently, my council are gathering my DS records and having a panel meeting to decide if he needs additional support for preschool. DS isnt in preschool and his records are a shambles.

It's apparently nothing to do with a statement and they will let me know what's been decided.

Do I need to intervene? Will I have to appeal whatever they decide, if they say there's no need for a shadow. I think DS will need one at pre-school, ABA shadow preferably.

Just worried if they decide something I will have more of a battle to get the right help, then if they hadn't decided anything at all. His records are all a year out of date! How can they decide anything without seeing him and assessing him?

Hmm, is it an Early Years panel of some sort? Does your area have any special early years nurseries/development centres? Who has instigated this? Does he have portage? It sounds educational, not under health.

MangoMonster · 07/11/2011 20:04

It was raised by the OT about DS visual impairment. No one from portage has seen DS in nearly a year so it's based on old info. I'm fine about it, they sounded helpful on the phone, just worried it will make applying for a successful statement harder. It was the health authority who refered to the special educational needs dept.

Can they accurately assess him without seeing him recently?

They could well be prepared to set things up early for your DS which is a rarity so I wouldnt worry too much.

When you apply for a statement there will be a lot of different reports in place then like another visit to a pead and an EP report to go with it at the time and anything else from any other proffs you see between now and when you are going to apply at school.

Maybe phone IPSEA and see if they have any info on this kind of assessment panel :)

Hope so coff33pot, maybe I should chill out a bit. Just don't want to get this process wrong... And make more mistake regarding DS than I already have...

Mango,

I don't really know much about the statementing process so no help there, but I know plenty about the feelings you have regarding mistakes... I blamed myself for ds1 issues for a long time, but since ds2 have realised that it really is luck of the draw... From what I can see, you are doing a fantastic job and your ds is very lucky to have you fighting for him......

EllenJaneisnotmyname · 07/11/2011 20:54

Sounds like they are being proactive! My DS went before an Early Years Panel at 2.10 (but with up to date information) and was given a 15 hour placement in a special pre-school, over 6 months before his ASD DX. It was an excellent school and he went on to MS primary. He got a statement for the start of Y1, he had been part time MS, part time SS in Reception. Which was why I was interested in what there is available locally to you. I don't think it should affect the statementing process, it was entirely separate in my LA.

Thanks dev, it's all about mistakes and regret sometimes... Should I do this, should I have done that. Can't be too defensive but at the same time, I know I need to be on the ball. Not much I can do I suppose, see what happens, just worried they will make an inaccurate decision and it wil take a lot of resources to overturn.

When do you start ABA? Have you found a consultant or tutor yet. DS's is going really well, so pleased. He's really enjoying the extra attention and his speech and signing is coming on. Definitely one of the best decisions I have made for him :)

By the way, the verbal behaviour book is brilliant so is the work in progress book, would really recommend them, if you have time to read them. Must be so lovely having a newborn, making me broody :)

Haven't started ABA yet,, it seems like its taking forever to set it all up... Hopefukly we should have something running in a months time.

I have been using jollyphonics for the couple of weeks and been getting lots of eye contact through that where there was one, so there is some progress. I bought a whole load of books, but haven't had the time to read any of them yet....

Ds is same here, loving the extra attention.....Smile
