IF or WHEN to tell SALT etc that we are doing ABA?

Just saw sleepehorse's thread below about ABA and your responses about having SALT etc withdrawn after telling them you did ABA. Was really Shock when i read that. Never thought this could happen.

We started ABA recently and DD seems to respond well to it. We just started NHS speech therapy (not sure it is usefu it is still early days).

So I wondered - what are the advantages and disadvantages of telling SALT etc that you are doing ABA?

We have been quiet about it so far...

Hi chocjunkie from what I can gather SALT and the LA's seem to be very opposed to ABA and so I think it's best to keep quiet. Not totally sure why but I'm sure someone will be along soon to tell you more.

Thanks sleepy. Yeah, I know ABA is not popular with the LAs. Probably I rather wondered if there are advantages in telling them.
We are just in the process for applying for a statement and I think I would want to get ABA via the statement route (if I can fight the fight). So we will have to come out as ABAers at some point. But when...???

Its a postcode lottery. It would make no difference in our area whatsoever: none. You would get exactly the same service as if you weren't doing it, unless you felt that the SALT service was not meeting your needs/compatible and requested something different, which would be your decision to make. This is true of the area I live in as well as the area I work in (two different Trust areas) so it would be worth asking around/parents and carers doing ABA in your area for a more representative picture.
