just checking in to see how ur all doing. Been so busy we had ds birthday party - the whole class of 30 was invited, nearly collapsed when they all accepted! Ds was a bit overwhelmed but enjoyed it and all the presents and the ooglies cake! Watching all the other kids (especially the boys) actually made me feel better as they were pretty wild! The best bit was at school ds stood up in assembly while the whole infants school sang happy birthday and then sang back to them that he was 7yrs old. He's went off to a birthday party on his own and enjoyed it and was really well behaved. And the other night went off trick or treating with other children without me and loved it. He has been playing in the playground, not all the time but anything is good. Now that I have allowed a diagnosis (I was resistant because I hate the label and the fact that the label allows for huge assumptions) and the statementing is in progress - the school are more proactive and now that he is not at a separate work station and learning with the other children AND not being segregated - they are looking at ways to support ds to become more independent. Actually writing this down makes me realise how hard the little fella has worked!! Now I'm looking at some private therapies torn between ABA or speech therapy - what do you lot think?
Btw took the advice on here and gave ds behavioural balance DMg and I can really see a difference

Hi and welcome back :)

Sounds like your DS has had a great time. Glad his birthday went ok. I would have been terrified at 30 kiddies Shock

Nice to hear the school is more hands on now.

I dont know anything about either ABA or Speech Therapy so I cant help on that one I am afraid. I expect someone in the know will be along soooooon x

We just had an ed psychologist assessment where she recommended commended intensive communication based speech therapy to direct ds's language. We do ABA, but been told to teach the advance stages of communication, i.e. Conversation a communication based speech therapist is more useful. I guess it will depend on what stage your DS is.

Cheers - it's so difficult to decide so thanks for advice

And I know I sound like I'm boasting but the nt mums just don't get why it's such a big achievement for him

Is it speech therapy that he needs or 'communication' therapy?

frizzcat · 05/11/2011 11:10

I think communication to be honest he needs help with conversation with his peers he is also lacking self confidence because he talks very quietly or whispers to people he doesn't know
