Positive thread - school

I'm hesitant about posting this: tempting fate, can't quite believe it's real, may jinx everything etc.

BUT, I have found a wonderful school with a wonderful head.

After years of heartache with an 'Outstanding' school who knew bollocks all about SEN and couldn't be bothered with DS, who lied at Tribunal and stitched up excuses with the LA and S&LT before Tribunal, I really cannot believe it.

The head really cares. He has spent alot of time with DS and is doing all the running to get his statement transferred. The school is kind and caring without losing sight of academic ambitions. The head is proactive about SEN support, has read all DS's reports and statement and is taking action to support him.

Honestly, I felt like crying today when the head was coming out with things like - 'these services are reactive, we shouldn't let problems develop and then support the child, we should support him so they don't develop, so I've rung x, y and z'.

He sorted DS out himself when he didn't want to go into class, sat with him, took him back to the office to do some 'jobs' for him, read to him. DS thinks he''s 'awesome'.

Really, can this be true? Have I landed on some parallel universe? Or is it like that film/book 'The Firm' where the firm looks fab but then you become embroiled in a mafiosa pact????

I hope things have started to turn around for you and your DS, AT. You could do with some luck going your way. Is this the school out of LA? It's nice to be dealing with people who actually seem to want to help, because they are out there. Smile

No AT, these schools DO exist. Finding them is like finding hens teeth though.

And it can very much depend on timing too as I believe the 'opportunities ' are fluid. I truly hope you've caught the wave!

Thanks folks. I think you are right about the moment of opportunity. It is a small village school but has a new head - just in place for a year. Very switched on and 'modern' in ideas about inclusion etc.

It has made me realise how pronounced DS's difficulties are and he seems a long way from being able to manage a whole day in class. But in his last school, he cocooned himself with a couple of friends, flying under the radar, not speaking to teachers etc, not improving skills as he was never taught them or taken out of his comfort zone.

This will be tough for him, but with the right TA, we will see how much he can progress and cope in m/s.
