Hi

Looking for recommendation here - EP's report on my son (age 10) has said she thinks he has social communications disorder (poss Asperger's) plus dyspraxia. He's being referred on to the autistic team for yes/no on Aspergers, but the wait is long and I want to try to do something to help him before then.

Can a SALT help? Would a drama group be a good idea?

I find it difficult to judge what help he needs because within the family we pretty much work around him, slow clear speech, very direct instructions when required, no metaphors etc. He doesn't speak much (either at school or at home). He can express himself for simple things, but for complicated situations (lost password for website so can't do homework, for example) he can't express this coherently and I have to interrogate him using yes/no questions until I work out enough of the situation to see what's going on.

Any ideas for things I can do/support I can get in very welcome.

Thanks.

My DS has been assessed with a communication disorder and social skills is what the SALT is assessing him for now. So yes a SALT can also deal with this and not just speech issues.

She visits the school and also has a 1 to 1 initial assessment with you. She then advises the school on strategies and methods that they are to apply to encourage and help in all aspects of social skills. My SALT told me she initially goes into school for a few weeks training the relevant staff and then leaves them to it, coming back to review to ensure it is still being implemented correctly.

Drama group or infact any clubs where your child can meet people is a great idea. My DS goes to Beavers and it is helping greatly :)
