Some good news today. Smile I think I could do with it.

DS2 (ASD, statement) has been in secondary for 1/2 a term now. They have set a few subjects, science set 3 out of 5, English set 4/5 but most subjects are in tutor groups, and I was really, really happy that DS2 was pretty average! Yesterday he was set for maths. One of his TAs noted in his homework book that his new maths teacher was Mrs Xxxxx. DS2 couldn't remember which set he was in, though. Typical, so I aked in the H/W book and tonight found out he's in set 1/5! Wow! I don't care if he only stays there for a week! Grin

Wow! Good on him! Maths is the way forward! So happy for you both!

EllenJaneisnotmyname · 01/11/2011 19:53

Thanks, all. It's always been his best subject, but I would have been happy with set 3, ecstatic with set 2. I can't help feeling there may be some mistake...

purplepidjin · 01/11/2011 19:57

ASD (or dyslexia, dyspraxia etc) does not = stupid!! And your son is the proof Grin

EllenJaneisnotmyname · 01/11/2011 20:00

Stupid, no. Completely lacking in common sense, yes! Grin

My DS who is 2 is already obsessed with numbers, car plates, tv, writing them. I do sometimes wonder why, is there a correlation between ASD and numbers?

purplepidjin · 01/11/2011 20:15

Ah, but there's no common sense involved in maths!

Mango, lots of evidence shows that people with ASD find the world easier to understand if the can find, or impose, a pattern on it. Which is why people with ASD show a lot of rigid behaviour, have specific routines etc.

Maths is very logical and has strict rules which can be explained. So, it's common for people with ASD to enjoy Maths because they feel comfortable and can easily understand the rules.

I have know several teens with AS who identified as Emo because of the strict rules on dress, music etc!!
