DS was assessed at 6.1 years using the BAS II.

The EP says that the general conceptual ability was 110-123, the verbal cluster 116-132 and the Non verbal cluster 112-129. He says that they are above average but are they just a bit above, a lot above etc?

I'm trying to figure out really what he should be able to achieve with the right support IYSWIM. That was the whole reason for me asking for the EP visit but he seemed to think that we were banging on about getting him a statement. We weren't (will do in a couple of years though Wink

The scores were

Word definitions T score 65 Percentile 93
pattern construction 38 12
matrices 58 79
verbal similarities 66 95
quantitive reasoning 67 96
recall of digits forward 44 27
recall of digits backwards 55 69

Word reading standard score 125 percentile rank 95

Thank you. I really should have looked at this in more detail earlier. The main is so infuriating and has written in the report that DS is our only child and inferring that we are trying to find something wrong with him that isn't there Angry. I obvsiouly don't - who would?

EP is employed by the LEA not to readily statement so this may be why he has acted as he has. EP as well CANNOT make any medical diagnosis, these people can only recommend ideas for his educational needs.

Is your DS currently under the care of a developmental paediatrician?.

What support is DS receiving at present within school?. What does SENCO think?. What would you ideally like him to receive?. If you're thinking 1 to 1 or longer term SALT for instance then a statement is the option here.

Waiting a couple of years to apply for a statement is actually a course of action I would not advise. Its far better to apply for a statement sooner rather than later. You can personally apply for such a document and you do not need anyone's permission to do so.

Hi Atilla

He was very combatitive (sp!) so am dreading hearing him drone on later :)

Ds is under a dev paed and we have our second appointment on 30th November. I'm hoping for an AS dx then.

When I requested the EP visit I was very disillusioned with the school last year as they were doing very little for him, even down to provision of equipment. This year he has been recognised for the difficulties he has given that we have an 18 pg OT report, BABO report including retained reflexes, audiology report, EP report and paed report.

His y2 teacher is the head of KS1 so on the leadership team and is fantastic. He doesn't need 1:1 as such, just keeping on track and looking out for sensory overload as well as help with social interaction. She has implemented everything that I could ask for and treats me as if I might know what my child needs.

The reason that I am not applying for a statement yet (and I know that you are very keen on applying early) is that I cannot evidence that there is anything that the school cannot provide under SA+ as at present there is nothing else he needs. They are starting social skills group with him today.

I am scared of secondary school though so will apply prior to transition if not before if things start to fall apart in the next few years.

Thank you Attila

I think a marked discrepancy within subscales is often relevant. So very high percentiles for most things, but relatively low for pattern recognition and forward digit span would suggest to me that there might be some issue with working memory But not expert

EllenJaneisnotmyname · 31/10/2011 23:29

As percentiles,

General conceptual ability was 110-123 would be 75th to 94th

Verbal cluster 116-132 would be 85th to 98th

Non verbal cluster 112-129 would be 79th to 97th.

So, yes, pretty high! Assuming you know percentiles mean that if he is on the 75th percentile, 75 children the same age would score less than your DS and 25 would score more. An average child would be on the 50th centile.

But these just mean that your DS has a good underlying IQ. It does not mean that he can apply his intelligence without support. And a score of the 12th centile on pattern recognition shows that he has a 'spiky' profile, very 'normal' for ASD type disorders! He has his strengths and his deficits, obviously. It's going to be a case of arguing that he has the potential to succeed in life with his underlying intelligence, but only if he is allowed to apply it.

THank you ladies. I had my meeting yesterday and I'd posted this on the Prim Ed board too for some traffic who said the same as you. However the percentile thingy is v. useful EJ.

DS apparently lost interest on the pattern construction test but then during "extended testing" that they can't mark, he was able to do it. ie with a teacher he could do it.

I came out of the meeting knowing that my DS was clever but not a genius (which is not what I would want anyway), that his end of Y1 scores were around about what you would expect for a boy suspected of being on the spectrum with dyspraxia (thanks IB!) and that I know that the school this year is completely on board with all of the very little things that he needs at the moment to keep him on track yet to encourage his independence in the classroom.

At the point of requesting that the EP visit last year, he was asking whether I was going for a statement. The answer was that if they can't do these tiny things I am asking for (ie quiet time when sensory overload, writing slope etc etc) then I'll have to. We are now working completely together and they are doing everything and more that I have asked for.

I did tell the EP that I'd be coming back for a statement before Y4 for social and emotional needs - couldn't help but pointing that out Grin

Thanks again. Sometimes I feel that I need you ladies on my shoulder (figuratively!) before I head into these meetings to settle my thoughts so I don't just blurt stuff out that will get me into trouble as one of "those mothers!) Grin
