My DS is 2 and non verbal so far. We are teaching him signing. Would that be of use? Does you DS say any words in context?

ilovesprouts · 29/10/2011 22:39

no nothing just baby babbles but he does a little signing that he does at his sn school

I'm sure others in a similar position will come along with helpful info, but I'd stick with signing.

My dd2 is 3 and non speaking apart from mum, up and ddddd (dad). We are going with a total communication approach, which is mostly signing which has made life much easier for everyone. We're using makaton. She has no other underlying issues though, pure speech and language, so things might be different for you.

Signing sounds lik way to go.

Makaton has been invaluable for my youngest. The signs are simple, easy to follow and each has a visual sign as well.

Mr Tumble on Something Special uses Makaton so you may also find, as wee have, that lots of other kids know a few basic signs just from watching this.

DS has ASD and was non verbal until a couple of months ago. He is 3 now. We use lots of gestures and over the top tones of voice. We also sign key words. We have got him an iPad and bought apps designed for ASD and communication, he now says lots of words, although it is not functional speech, more naming items, colours, numbers etc.

my ds (ASD and mild to mod LD) had the same 7 (spoken) words from 18 months to just past 4th birthday. However we started signing with him from 18 months and he got to more than 200 signs and 3 and 4 sign 'sentences' made life so much easier... Grin. He is now chatting away with speech. (alright its not very clear yet, and rather sterotypical, but he is understandable by most people at least 50% of the time, which we doubted he ever would be... Grin.)

do the school discuss with you which signs they use, so you can use them at home too?

ilovesprouts · 30/10/2011 10:34

i use the signs the use at school and home he knows a few so its coming along, oh by the way ds2 loves mr tumble. [hgrin]
