Private assessment for ASD - how much?

Roughly how much would it cost for a private assessment of ASD for a 4yr old? Obviously I don't expect a precise answer but a rough figure so I know if it's possible for me to afford it. I'm just back from a meeting with an EP and was told DS would probably be diagnosed in primary 6 as the autistic diagnosis team are so busy, he's in primary 1 just now.

Has he had any appointments at all yet? It might be possible to get him seen by GOSH autism team.

MangoMonster · 26/10/2011 16:25

It's in Harley street London, sorry don't know about Scotland but I'm sure someone will.

ihatecbeebies · 26/10/2011 17:11

No he's not been assessed by anyone yet, the teacher done a classroom observation but that's it, he's seeing the SALT tomorrow and the EP said she'd do an observation on him in the classroom but as the autistic diagnosis team are so busy they only see children in either nursery or primary 6. In nursery when he seen the SALT in nursery though she wasnt very good, said his eye contact was good when it was terrible and just said he needs to improve his social skills...

There's a special unit at great Ormond street hospital in London. I think you can be referred as long as DC is 3 or over.

someone kindly put this on one of my threads :)

Ihate, you need to put that in writing to the EP to 'clarify' that you heard correctly, indicating the potential detriment to his accessing of services and generally being understood, not to mention his resulting mental health.

StarlightMcKenzie · 26/10/2011 20:05

You also need to ask in the letter who are the dx team, how you contact them and who will be able to supply you with their policy of only dx in yr 6.

ihatecbeebies · 26/10/2011 20:36

The school are sending me the minutes of our meeting so it will be in that, I wrote to the GP when I didn't get a referral and just got it in writing that I had to contact the EP, and now the EP has said this, it's just one hurdle after another. But I'll keep trying though, one thing I've started to notice is that you need to fight and fight for everything for your child if they have special needs, it's not like I'm asking for a lot though, just the things I feel he should be entitled to like an assessment!

The first doctor I spoke to in the beginning said I had to wait for EP report. But I saw another and took DS on a bad day and requested a referral to a pead, but ended up referred to camhs. Try another GP if you are not happy with the report.

ihatecbeebies · 26/10/2011 21:15

I just had a look at the GOSH website, it says;

"We cannot accept referrals from family doctors if the child has not already been assessed by local services (i.e. for a first opinion on a suspected case of an autistic spectrum disorder)"

So I don't think they'll be able to help me until the dx team have seen him...in 5 years time Angry

I bet it won't be in the minutes.

ihatecbeebies · 26/10/2011 21:31

If it isn't in the minutes (which tbh you're probably right starlight, it wont be) then I'll write to the EP and ask for it in writing, what should I do then once I have it in writing though? Or if I get in touch with the dx team and they confirm it with me that they won't see him until then what would my next step be? Or do I have nowhere to go after that?

I don't know. You will have some options, but getting them to put things in writing creates an evidence trail that you may be able to use to your advantage later. Also you might be able to get your GP to fax it to gosh with a referral etc. Sometimes though just asking for things in writing changes minds.

Shock how much?
Are they based in London too?

WilsonFrickett · 26/10/2011 23:59

EP's don't diagnose, they can only refer to medical services for dx (I'm in Scotland). You need to go back to the GP and push for a peadiatric referral. Can you see another GP in your practice? What about HV? They are yanking your chain with the Primary 6 thing, that is utter bs. I'm not saying there won't be a long wait for appts (took us 18 months) but there is no way you'll wait 6 years before even getting a referral.

Where are you? (PM me if that's too personal for the board)

WilsonFrickett · 27/10/2011 00:02

Sorry to double post but I'm Angry on your behalf!

What Star said, start writing everything down and emailing everything back. Who is 'the autistic diagnosis team' made up of? I'm really confused and can't quite make up my mind if you've been talking to someone who doesn't know anything or if they're geniunely trying to lead you up the garden path...

ihatecbeebies · 27/10/2011 01:02

perception that is expensive, but worth it though if no one else could help. I suppose if I've no alternative I could try fundraising to try and get the cash together for a private assessment.

Wilson I've pm'd you Smile
