For those who've been following the situation re me and my breast cancer treatment (still looking as though it's been successful), some more cheering news:
I've been appointed as an official Adviser to the All Party Parliamentary Group on autism, working with MPs and members of the House of Lords and a large number of the national experts. Should be fun/challenging. It's certainly an honour, and an unexpected one. Much to do.

Many thanks to all here who have cheered me on through the last months...
Have a celebratory Brew or Wine

Amber.... This is good news on both counts! Wine

I listened to the Radio 4 piece today about what happens to young adults with autism when they reach 18 . It gave some shocking statistics relating to further education, poor employment prospects, postcode lottery specialised education. It was all there (depressingly).

amberlight · 25/10/2011 16:43

Yup, until now, provision pretty much stops at 18, as if we were cured at that point. The SEN Green Paper is proposing a lot of very sensible changes to that complete waste of young people's lives and chances. Recent conversation with a local authority (doesn't matter which one) "So, you've counted the young adults with autism - what is the provision for them?"
"Oh we don't have anything to offer - but we can give out a personal budget so they can buy their own services".
"What services are those?"
"We don't know...er...they could hire their own care workers?"
"But how will people who are often entirely trusting and naive do that safely?"
"Umm....".

There's some distance to go, isn't there.

congraulations on the job, sounds brilliant.

Yes my sisters son progressed so well at school his severely ASD+, happy, able to go out, actively do things but since going into adult services, we are now v. concerned for his health and all concerned are on emergency alert. She has tried everything and failing to find support both short and long term, we are bracing ourselves for the worst.

There's lots of very good people on that panel, thankfully, so I will be one of many (hopefully) sensible voices to be heard. A Wine? Excellent! Just the thing...

Congratulations - really glad things are going well for you on health front - and also that you'll be fighting our corner on the advisory front.
